I guess the free badge is something they want to phase out? They only offered it this year as an option and its taken a few weeks longer to arrive than previous years - I can see it being a purchase item next year. In fairness, it must cost them a fortune in admin and shipping alone.

I think it's probably down to them placing an order later, due to the optional nature of the badge.

Badges cost around a pound per unit if you order in the hundreds... I suspect Rapha's order will be quite large, so they might get them for as little as 50 pence per unit. Add stamps and you get to a pound per unit... then of course someone need to sort them pack them etc...

I don't think they'll phase them out, they're par of their advertising budget and they have to be seen going the extra mile... they get a lot of business out of their Festive 500 brand

7357 roundel achievers apparently, so if they donate the price to charity for 'digital' roundel winners then its £7500 upwards? ish ...

I guess there is a lot of brand awareness for that money.

I'm shocked that there are actually people who want the badge? I always assumed people did it just so they could focus on getting miles in over Christmas, or for some bragging rights with mates etc. I know loads of people who've done it - some in multiple years - none of them ever sent off for the badge

    You’ve not done it?
Most years it’s pretty hard for normal people with jobs, families, kids etc over Xmas. The badge is certainly harder to earn than a sportive medal.
I just like having them in a drawer :D Just something to look at in years to come and think - wtf?

Yeabbut we don't have 600 Watt to brag about here, so we have to make do with cloth badges...

No - I've done it- just don't see the point of a badge? I'd actually argue people getting a sportive medal makes more sense, since they're handed out as you get off the bike, meaning you don't have to 'do' anything to get one. Not taking the p1ss here, just don't understand it (not that I'd mug anyone off for doing it!)

Look it from this point of view... it is a physical representation of an achievement...

Do olympic athletes want their medal? Yes, they do!

In this day and age do you need a physical medal, when a virtual one does the same job?... ultimately nobody will ever ask you to show your medal to prove you really won gold in Rio... but try and tell them they might as well do without it.

A cloth badge is the same thing on a parochial scale

It's arrived... and yes I do like a woven badge.

I actually think that they are nicely designed, and I've always been a bit of a collector of nice things like that.

I'd still want one even if I hadn't ridden the thing.

In comparison, the 'medals' that you tend to get at sportive are usually tat.

    Each to their own.

Mine came on a piece of black cardboard with a Rapha logo on the back.

I'm happy with my badge, its done a great job filling a hole on my Castelli Perfetto shoulder, after a pot hole interaction.

My first completion of the Festive 500 which I was proud to complete, five or six 50-60 mile rides finished the job off, I really enjoyed it (we did get lucky with the weather mind).

Apparently this is the last year of the cloth badges

Sad, but then again... if they allow anyone around the world to claim the badge... it will get costly. Imagine sending stuff to Australia...
Maybe keep the badge for UK only? :D
