Chavez dropped already so it looks like its Yates is on his own.

I wonder if chavez is actually knackered or being petulant

Why would he be petulant? He was a protected rider until he got dropped a few days ago and Yates left him to win a stage that he could have easily taken himself.

I don’t think Chaves has a 3 week GT in him unfortunately

    Edit I mean anymore

looks like everyone is so scared of the zoncalan it sedates the race a tad.

100, making the race hard AF doesn't necessarily add to the spectacle

the previous supposed "quiet easy"stages really took it out of the bunch maybe?

    lot of factors

Oh yeah of course, especially the 200+km one

But even if you're feeling good you know that you aren't going to attack today until the final few KMs

hoping for a few attacks on penultimate climb is a bit optimistic...maybe over the top and on the descent?

2 of the winners on the Zoncolan have come from breaks so there is stuff to ride for before they get to the foot.

The harder they ride over the previous climbs the fewer people go fight for position at the bottom of the climb too.

Furthermore, if you know someone like Dumoulin can smash out a lot of power for 40-50 mins but struggles when it’s hard all day AND up and down, why not try to make it hard for him, if you can?

This is what I have been pondering. Especially given the gradients on these pre-climb climbs.

sign of weakness by MS is my take. they look more scared of the stage than sunweb. there is that "keep the team together as long as poss perogative" but seems moot given the ending.

Agreed. Not like them either. Wonder if Chavez’s lack of form has spooked them.

Froome is running 34-32 by the way; so perhaps he shared my concern about his ability to spin as fast as he likes to.

    i need a 32-34 for that climb.

Yates is losing weight in a spectacular and perhaps unhealthy rate spooks me! his eyeballs are in hollowed out sockets so deep you can reach in a touch the back of eye!

god, I hope I'm wrong..would be shame if yates collapses in the third.

Aru riding a normal compact 36-50 today with 30 on the back.

Only one of the favourites with a 36 small ring; the rest on 34s.

    Just from Twitter; Gregor Brown.

Also tallies with what I remember from riders like Aru and what gearing they rode last time up.

Froome felt 34x30 wasn’t short enough on his training I believe.
