Froome will be on 34-32 as mentioned earlier. Would like to have seen how those 1x bikes would have fared

Just so you guys know Pozzovivo hasn’t had great results on the Zoncolan.

Beaten by Rolland last time, for example.

Simone aside it’s not been flyweight guys who have done really well up it.

He’s obviously in better form, but I suspect he might not be right at the front.

Remember last time, I think was it Rogers who won (?), fans going crazy, riders going so slow they had time to nick the fan’s sunglasses and moto engines packing up because of the gradients.

Yeh, it was a bit mental last time. The rider on Rogers' wheel (think he was Bardiani, can't remember his name) got knocked off by a fan within the final 3km and completely lost his momentum. Gutted.

36 is a compact innit...unless bike tech has moved on quicker than I thought during my sojourn coaching football. 36*32 is about as low as you'd want to go on a road bike for a long climb, you are down to pretty much fast walking pace if you want with that.
34/50 is a regular compact... 36/52 is usually termed a pro compact or other silly marketing term. Standard is 39/53.

As above Froome and presumably some other pros will be on a 34, so it's not that remarkable.

34*32 at 90 rpm is 12.1 kmh, so somewhat more than a fast walking pace! The same speed on a 36 would be 85 rpm. At 110 rpm (too fast for me but probably what Froome's doing sometimes) it's 14.8 kmh

Anyway I've done plenty of long climbs with a 34*32, I find it especially good when there are steeper sections as you get a bailout gear, and it means you can keep the cadence up (if that's your thing).

    Zoncolanitis?
The second straight time this has happened and at almost the exact same point.

He's actually raced it though. I'm not sure anyone else in the top ten has.

    Dowsett also on a 34*32 https://twitter.com/alexdowsett/status/ ... 03488?s=19

Suspect there will be a lot of them today.

Aru tends to fair better on the steep stuff so he might not be quite as bad today.

Gavazzi, Barbin, Pederson, Conti in front, Jauregui, Didier and Mosca - chasing.

The RAI commentators, speaking before the start, seemed to think it will be a day for Aru, or maybe they were just hoping so.
They even had one of the older cyclists from a bygone era singing a song praising Aru.

    Carapaz also tipped by them.

In interviews from earlier in the day, Pozzovivo looked 15 years younger than he is, Aru pleasanter and more relaxed than one might expect, while Dumoulin (asked if the 16 kilo extra weight he has to Yates will be critical today) said he didn't believe it's that much difference, more like 11 kilo.

Lovely weather at the start; love the brassband they had playing there.

In these parts, it's not uncommon to see riders with a 34 on the front and a 42 on the back. I've no idea how fast they go but, on the steeper gradients we get (plenty at 20% plus), it tends to be quicker than the almost walking pace I manage on my 34*32 with a cadence of 'barely turning'.
