  • I think that was about right from Yates. The big mistake could have come from going with Froome that far out and blowing while Dumoulin rides to power. As it is he took enough time that a couple of successful short explosives attacks over TD will at least put it into the balance.

Still a big day tomorrow. Finestre!

This. There's loads more climbing to come. Dumoulin did really well today, but he's going to have to keep doing it.

sky might actually help yates out if they ride for the jersey seeing as he can ride that train as haig et al fade.

    You think they will?

MS fade or sky go full turbo train in the hills?

    Sky take over the reins.

as long as froomes knee/ hip holds up why not?

All things considered it's now definitely a two horse race? Natural disasters accepted.

I still think Yates cracking is a possibility but TD has shown he is capable of coping with the pressure.

    Yates ptp for stage 14

Simon's one to watch: Chris Froome - how will the four-time Tour de France winner be coping with the pressure of going for three Grand Tours in a row? We might find out today.

Yates feeling TD breathing down his neck from that interview.

They really need to get the podium hostesses to change their lipstick. It looks silly in the interviews.

Tomorrow we'll see who overdid it a bit and who has still got the legs. Plenty of hills to go.
If Froome is back on form, I guess Sky will drill it and cause mass carnage in the peloton

I am pondering this. Froome back in the game and still after pink could be a good or a bad thing for Dumoulin.
If Sky manage to crack Yates at some later date, then projecting back, Dumoulin is now standing pretty in virtual pink, already ahead of the rest, before the ITT. (I hope you get my drift, here)
On the other hand, given Froome is still 3 minutes down on GC, I would expect attacks to be set up from longer range, rather on the final kms of the final climb.
This is where I think Tom may be most vulnerable.

Well Froome is going to leap-frog Pozzy and Peanut after the TT.

whats the gc...sssss looking like now.

on that showing, Froome could get on the podium.

You think he’s got a Lazarus comeback in him?

No but he's in 5th now with Pozzy and Peanut ahead of him. He'll surely end up in 3rd after the TT if he keeps this form, whether he keeps this form is another thing entirely though.
He's got to deal with tomorrow first. It's one of those short fast climbs at the end which he's been struggling with.

They aren't that short or that fast. It looks a very interesting stage on paper.
Could surprise a few and dent the odd ambition.

He is due a bad day one way or another - looked imperious so far, there's bound to be a blip eventually.

I could see stage 18 - flat with one big climb at the end - being an opportunity for Dumoulin and Froome to take a bit of time - if the pace is really drilled over the flat it's no fun for the little guys, but Dumoulin and Froome can spin that big ring with no bother, then just need to make one big effort for the climb.

Then it really is all to play for in the alpine stage 19.

Froome will surely podium from here, can't see him overhauling both Dumoulin and Yates though - might be fun watching him try!

Well Sky needed that. Prior to today their best performer in this Giro had been Lily James in the advert breaks.

he does look frighteningly gaunt and stressed physically. mentally a few doubts coming in to. I hope I am wrong.

Ooof! That was a great finish. Only just finished watching as had to pick little one up just as they hit the bottom of the climb. Think Yates needed to take more on Dumoulin. Fair play to Froome though, the bloke never gives up. Reckon he could really create some carnage in the GC battle. Would love to see him make the podium.

“I felt like that (4km) was the moment that the race was really on the limit. I felt that was the moment for me to go. I’d obviously done the recon here and I knew the last few kilometres. The team had done a great job pulling me to that moment. Wout had done a big effort and made it really hard up until that point with 4km to go. Even right until the line Simon was just behind me. I kept on hearing 10 seconds, five seconds, 10 seconds. I didn’t know if he was going to catch me or not so it was such a relief to get into that last 100 metres and to hear that I was going to win the stage.”

Pozzovivo looked totally dejected in the finish zone. Even though, after also being dropped by Lopez, he then caught him again before the line. I suppose because Pozzo had said he hoped to be in pink this evening. Brought down to earth.

I watched the RAI interviews with Froome (two of them, one before and one after the ceremonies) and he was very relaxed and upbeat in both, suggesting not just pleased with today, but also very optimistic about the coming days.
Also his Italian was surprisingly better than okay - never heard him speak Italian before.
He got asked about the royal wedding too!

Unlike the Froome interviews, the RAI interview with Yates had to be conducted in English, and it came over that he wasn't totally satisfied with the outcome. Maybe because he hoped to out-distance TD more, or maybe because he now feels he has two main opponents.

Froome lived in Italy when he was at Barloworld, somewhere just south of Brescia I believe, and learnt decent Italian by all accounts.

Nothing suspicious about that turnaround in performance by Froome - if you believe in miracles.

    Bore off.

I doubt you even knew what a peloton was in the ‘90s when that kind of revalation was relevant.

Did you watch the commentary or did you just make your own up, you condescending knob?

4Km out and the commentator (Hatch?) said exactly what I said, that after the last two weeks, Froome's performance was "miraculous". Did you feel it necessary to take it up with him in any way? No, because you're just another keyboard warrior.

I suggest you stop watching cycling, and stop reading cycling forums.

Why? Because I choose to agree with others who don't agree with you?

    Jog on.

Did they have any evidence to support the latter point? He's been reasonably consistent in the past.

It’s probably because your first post of the whole Giro was a sarcastic dig at Froome. Twitter is that way ;)
