er - lights - fix them to your bike ... unless they specify otherwise - just a see-me light will do :)
I don't remember having to do this at Velo Birmingham, that's all. It will be daylight for the entire duration of the ride. I don't really see the point.

I pretty much always ride with a rear light on anyway - so it wouldn't affect me ...

    From the rider guide:

"all participants must have lights fixed to their bike for safety reasons"

    Errrrr, what?

er - lights - fix them to your bike ... unless they specify otherwise - just a see-me light will do :)

Doesn't state that lights have to be on or even work...
    handy :)

Interestingly - when I've done a local Tri (just the bike leg) - the marshals checked my bike to ensure the brakes and iirc - back light worked...

That’s because they learned a lesson from Velo Birmingham. Some riders took until after light up time to complete the course. Some of those didn’t have lights, and therefore finished with their bikes in an illegal state.
  • It makes complete sense for the organisers to ask for lights when you have 15k people of unknown ability on the roads. Carry lights and stop being a wimp

Not quite sure how asking a question makes me a “wimp”, but hey ho. If lights are required I’ll chuck them on, just couldn’t really see the need.
  • Interestingly my two 'team mates' have been told their start times, but I've not seen mine yet.

I've got mine. Same as my "team mates", ie back with the slow crowd...

There's a complete listing on the website if you want to check you are on the list!

    Bet that complies with gdpr

Thanks, still no mail, found myself on the massive pdf on the website though. Strange that it's publicly available like that

Did you read the Terms & Conditions?
I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles

They were probably written before the GDPR came in.
Bet there are fair few solicitors on the list that might take the opportunity to make a claim on that basis...

yes - I was aware names would be published - and start/finish times - no issue with that at all - I don't think they should be publishing partial DoB though - that's not GDPR compliant at all and we were not informed (prominently) that they would be doing so - otherwise I would've ensured it was fake ....

I assume (rightly or wrongly) that when you provide personal information to organisers of sporting events, that the more sensitive data such as next of kin, dob and any medical conditions you may have are there PURELY to be passed on to emergency services in the event of ... well, a medical emergency ... not to be published for the world to download/cache and therefore use/sell for those interested in illegal activities such as identity theft.

I appreciate that there are names that appear several times - but why not use a different identifier or do something that only the data owner would be able to decipher - ie add the DOB up - 15 Jan 1985 = 15+01+85 = 101 - publishing Joe Blogs - 101 - Joe could work out that it's him and others couldn't work out his exact DoB using that info. Whilst it's possible for 2 people of the same name to have data that adds up to the same, it's unlikely in 15k records...

Sure, I'll be in the Mexican wave...

If the organisers invited me and covered all the costs, I might even have a go at Velo South... but that will never happen, as I only have 80 followers, rather than 80,000... :?

But if you want you can join me for a "loop of Birmingham" the sunday before... can't promise closed roads though...

They haven't put the year on though, so it's not that bad.

Companies house publish month/year of directors - so here we go - we've now got a complete picture for anyone that's registered on both systems ...

For our company GDPR compliance I said that we don't need DoB recorded at all - if we haven't got it, we can't lose it .. I can understand a reasonable requirement for them to have DoB - but not to publish it to the whole world - even partially.... there's absolutely no justification for it.
  • There must be another unique identifier that can be used, something that is in the purchase reciept would work...

Ha ha... no, mine is a much broader loop... look at the rules on the Strava group (and join it I should add, since you are local... )

Re. Velo Birmingham... even if I was interested, it comes squeezed between the Brevet Cymru 400 km on the 4th of May and the Bryan Chapman Memorial 600 km on the 18th... I need a weekend off the bike between those two biggies! :D

They do seem like a bit of a shambles this lot. Given the screw ups with Velo North, the issues with the locals and basic stuff like this...
  • I'm off in the green wave - which thankfully isn't the first wave. Hopefully all the tacs out on the road will have been soaked up by the time I reach them!

Sadly in the first wave, but do not worry, I will use my face to pick up the last of the tacks as my tire explodes. I wonder if the individuals committing such a heinous crime of tack dropping have actually considered that in the event of someone coming off their bike and passing away could actually be done for manslaughter.

I don't think a tyre will explode... it will deflate in the same way as any other puncture

That’s what happened with Velo Birmingham. The ‘fast track’ riders went out first and hit the oil and tacks. I was in the first ‘general’ wave, as I am with this, and got to the problem area just as the roadsweepers were clearing up the straw / sand. Result.
  • I’m in the fast track, but expect to be so slow up that first hill that plenty of others will have mopped up any tacks by the time I get to them

The route turns up Kennel hill just after the start, but doesn’t use the steep bit, it then goes almost immediately right, along the Golf course road, after that it’s a 4 or 5 mile steady ( ish ) up hill slog to Duncton. If there was going to be any sabotage, I’d expect it much later on, probably more likely at Ifold or Plaistow, as that’s where most of the objectors seem to be living.

I'm in the blue wave, so not a bad start time for me.
Hoping there aren't too many issues with locals but it will be what it is
