Dodgy battery connection / corrosion / contamination on the terminals causing a short circuit sometimes? Or maybe a dodgy wire somewhere hidden.

nah it was hanging at a weird angle and not taking up the slack from the chain when shifting. i'll keep an eye on it and now have a replacement if i need it
