You can estimate the amount of friction in the drivetrain by measuring the force required to turn the pedals backwards (assuming the loss is the same in both directions - the effect of the freehub will cause losses to be overestimated).

Quick back-of-the-envelope calculation suggests 0.2N corresponds to a loss of 1W at 100rpm. I reckon that it takes about 1N to turn the pedals on my poorly-maintained cross bike which corresponds to 5W total loss in the drivetrain. So there are probably a couple of watts to be had (big jockey wheels, fancy chain, ceramic bearings etc) but it's very marginal gains.

NB: You can't really use this approach to estimate losses in the section of chain under load, because friction will scale with increasing tension. Jockey wheels are on the low-tension side of the system though, so the losses will only scale with cadence and chainring size.
    Pannier, 120rpm.

I think if there was that much benefit in running bigger jockeys then Shimano would just add them as standard and use it in their marketing. Strikes me as snake oil to some extent.

oddly shimano's ones are very well designed so negate a lot of the gainz from these gimmicky things. if you can put out 300w for example would 1/2 a watt really make a load of difference?

The trend seems to be more and more massive tubing. At this rate, they'll be soon built out of tubes resembling standard 6" Marley guttering.
