    However, the fact that Froome lost 37 seconds to Porte in a relatively short TT suggests he is not at the same level he was at this point last year.

    Or alternatively that Porte is not at the same level as he was at this point last year.

    In 2015 he came 39th in the opening TT at the actual Tour - which he then won. I'd wait until we've seen some climbing.

    Froome clearly isn't where he would want to be - is he always on top form around this time though? I might be mistaken but I get the impression Froome has always been one who peaked for his A race rather than held form over a longer period and it may be he's come straight from a heavy training block?

    Looking forward to watching todays race - one of the best rides I ever did was on an old MTB from a campsite near Macon up round the wine producing hills they tackle today - just 4-5 hours riding out along the Saone and then up round that cat2 they go up - no set route just an old Michelin map in the back pocket. Really lovely area if anyone is looking for a stop off for a few days on the way south.

    In 2013 he was on top form - only Porte within two minutes on GC. But then he started his season much earlier and barely rode after the Tour.
    In 2015 and 2016 he still won the Dauphine - but only just (10s over TJVG and 12s over Bardet) - but then he went to the Vuelta

    The breakaway aren't going to make it, today.
    Dylan van Baarle is last man standing, but FDJ, Katusha, Sunweb, DD and Direct Energy have all been working hard in the chase.
    No, not Cofidis though. :wink::lol:

    Katusha just lost last man 100m too early. They put a lot of work into that.

    Good win by Bauhaus. Demare second.

    That mirrors French cycling on the global stage these days: tremendous strength in numbers but still lacking brilliant winners.

    This climb is going to be brutal. Hot day and folks are off the back even before the "official" start.

    Kirby tells me that Contador is bouncing which must be a sign of good form. I think it means he is going uphill.
