  • what sort of ride did Awet Habtom have - I don't know him either - but was having a nose round the German Bike Aid team Habtom is Eritrean - 19 years old - 6 foot and 65kg....65 kg! He finished 5 minutes down on his own. Ahead of the big gruppettos but way behind the first groups. Must ahve been a strange ride in his first European pro race. Good lad - hope he makes it!

    On the right

Recorded the stage of Sky today - stopped with 4km to go. As reliable as Eurosport - at least they have the excuse of having other live events though and now seem able to alter the EPG when the programme overruns. Bike though do not, even though the follow up peog likely to be a documentary about mountain biking or something.

Final stage today. Boswell has crashed (in first 10km of racing). Can not continue and en route to hospital in an ambulance.

That last, uncatagorised climb is 2.1kms at 9.1%.
So, Bondone or not, it may not be decided until that climb.
Boswell is a big blow. Leaves Sky very lightweight on the climbs.
A number of riders, LBL bound, did not start, today.

Formolo a DNS today - probably planning for the LBL on Sunday.

9 riders on the front: Gastauer, Chernetski, Rosskopf, Morabito, Gavazzi, Bagioli, Martinez, Bongiorno and Totò. On the Passo Durone with an advantage of around 5 mins; Pirazzi and Sterbini stuck in between.

Seems quite early to be on the Passo Durone. 2 hours before live coverage and over 60kms covered.
Must have been a very fast start.

    Edit: Mmmm, maybe not: 40.2kph.
Must be an early finish then.

Particularly bad news for him as the Tour of California is his major target for the year.

Might be a course tweak as the they have the summit finish at 68km.

    1 Bongiorno
    2 Martinez
    3 Totó

Sterbini and Zardini still in no-man's-land. Wonder if they offended Team DS Bruno at breakfast?

Shame it is pre-TV, but the riders will soon be heading into Riva Del Garda.

    Arco sprint

    1 Gavazzi; 2 Totò; 3 Bagioli

    Break —> +3’20" Sterbini, Zardini —> +5’30” Peloton.

Much annoyance with teams/ top 20 GC riders withdrawing before today's stage for the LBL. Talk about respect for the race etc. but I guess it is nothing new.

Ascent of Mount Bondone has begun, Gavazzi has been dropped from the break and the Bardiani duo have dropped back to the peloton.

Update on Bozwell from team Sky is good - checks show no fractures or serious damage.

Giving his team mate Carthy, in the young rider's jersey a good kicking, working with Bernal.
Not the greatest team mate is our Pierre.

Landa now being brought into play.

  • DUPONT chasing back - after yesterdays heroics he's still only a minute back on GC in 13th place - had a consistent race so far - must be on good form

Landa and Thomas have answered all the attacks, but there is still a chance for Pinot if he can take the stage and the bonus seconds. All back together under 4km to go.

Pinot takes the stage and Thomas the overall after a technical finish on the cobbles of the town.
