    It was two reasons: resale value, which is great if you buy second hand. And clearance for larger tyres. Titanium bikes generally seen to be built with more clearance.

    I'd get carbon forks though

    The idea behind it was to build a sub 8 kg bike without spending a fortune, I don't think I am going to achieve that with titanium or steel. Even in an Audax context, I can't see myself wanting mudguards... there are a handful of (mainly winter) Audax that still require them, most of the interesting part of the calendar is mudguard free.

    I have a 9kg (disc) bike which does pretty much everything, it just feels quite sluggish on the climbs, as compared to lighter rim braked bikes I had in the past. Technically I don't need another bike, but if there was an opportunity to retain some of the features of a disc bike (mainly clearance for 28 mm tyres) and reducing the weight in a meaningful way (1 kg or more), that would be interesting

    I reckon you need to consider a Caad as I think it will potentially give you what you want. The frame is cheap if you buy in the sales and that leaves you more to buy higher end lightweight components. Mine was a Caad 10 disc and that took a 32c tyre easily so in sure the rim version would take a Sector 28. Horizontal TT too! Shame they all seem to be black.

    It seems very good value for a full carbon frameset that ticks all my personal boxes (reasonable clearance for bigger tyres, BSA bottom bracket... thoughts/alternatives with a decent resale value (so NO Planet x/Rose/Ribble etc.)?

    I know you said you were not interested in any PX "rubbish" but after 4 pages there seem to be few options out there that fit your criteria.

    How about recanting your initial criteria and considering the Planet X Pro Carbon. I bought a frameset last year and built it up with 105 5800 and a set on wheels from Malcolm (Archetype/Miche hubs). I've been running Michelin Pro4 Endurance 28mm on these wheels for about 11 months now without any major issues. Admittedly I did have to modify the band-on clamp screw to improve the final clearance but all has run problem free since initial fitting.

    Band-on clamp issue was this but I just added a washer to the bolt head side to move the bolt thread away from the tyre

    I know the nay-sayers will be along to trash the Pro Carbon as old technology and generally rubbish but I'm happy with mine and you could do a lot worse for the money

    How big do Pro 4 28mm measure?

    My 25's are 28mm...

    But on the Pro Carbon, they are quite old now and were never renown as being the stiffest back in the day.

    That's some seriously tight clearance!

    What size frame is that? With the fork it obviously won't make any difference, but I'd say there's a chance you might not get away with that rear on a difference size.

    At least with the pro carbon it's not got much value to lose to start with.... cheap to replace if you crash it too.

    It's a Large frameset - essentially a 56cm by most standards.

    Not had any major issues with the clearance. Bit of minor crud build up under the rear seat stay bridge after some autumn/winter rides on wet/crappy roads. Nothing that a regular post ride clean-up can't rectify

    Went to the local shop here in Italy, massive selection of brands and bikes, they probably have 200 bikes on the floor... most Cannondale seem to have plenty of clearance, especially the CAAD 12, which I do like rather a lot

    I don't think there is a difference between the 2016 and 2017 framesets - the CAAD 12 is new from last year and I am fairly certain the frame won't have changed from last year.

    Well, we'll see... if I buy, I will probably buy from a shop... don't like buying new frames or bicycles online if I can find them in a shop... these days you don't even save a penny, unless you find your size in the summer sales, but that can happen in a shop too. I was surprised to find that bikes are marginally cheaper in a shop here than they are at Evans online...

    Don't think it is going to happen before summer, when, I assume, the 2017 models will go on sale

    Ugo I have been putting in some miles on my Tarmac SL4 2016. It will take 28mm tyres at a push and I know the Sector 28s will fit (just). Every time I ride the Tarmac it impresses me much more than any other bike I have owned especially with regards to handling. I really think you should investigate this before you buy. I know the dale is a great bike but the Tarmac IMO is better.

    A friend of mine has a Dual that was the first built up with Potenza (it's his bike in the Promo pics on the website, with guards etc.) and he absolutely loves it. So much so that he hasn't ridden his C60 yet this year.

    Yes fair enough I didn't realise. My 2016 Tarmac Comp with Ultegra and a fantastic Praxis chainset was £1500 in the sales and I got it on RTW. Specialized will reduce their prices in the next month or two....The equivalent bike is now £2700!

    IF I go for a big brand, I am pretty set on Cannondale, they seem to come with the better overall package... even the wheels, which will be replaced fairly quickly... Aksium are reliable and easy to sell, whereas a pair of Axis rims are a very hard sell.

    The Dolan frame only option is still a contender though

    Thoughts about the Planet X Maratona? I know originally I said no Planet X, but at that price (399) there is really nothing to lose in terms of second hand resale value... it seems awesome value for a high modulus super light frameset. It would appear it has BSA and from the photos it would also appear to have massive clearance for 28 mm tyres... basically ticking all the boxes... the blue one is not even terribly ugly

    How about a Ritchey Road Logic?

    being steel you may have to be a bit more selective around components to get your target weight, but I think it would be possible.

    Triton is normally the cheapest UK seller but they dont seem to have any frames currently.

    ACycles in France also normally have a good price.

    Dolan Dual ticks a lot of boxes. It's not super heavy, but not light. A CAAD12 would be lighter. But the Dolan has big clearance, threaded BB and mudguard eyes.

    I hear you... given my plans to get into long distance, it was the logical choice, the only bike that made sense... and I like it... :D
