Golf is A list, truley international with large pay days and massive sponsorship deals.
Moto GP although not A list hasn't been mentioned, rallying too ( used to be big here when McRae was about).
10-15 years time it will be VR Internet gaming... Sat on a turbo against a guy in China...0 -

Golf is far from truly international - big in US, big in UK (though dwindling), and barely played anywhere else.
Football is the biggest sport on the planet for some reason (well it's a very simple game that can be played anywhere, needs no special equipment other than a ball etc...) so has to be A list.
As others have said there are a number of other sports with A list events - but whilst the media remains obsessed with football, those sports can't get to A list status.0 -
Here in Scotland the bias towards football is so utterly massive it's ridiculous. Rugby gets a bit of a look-in during the 6 nations, there's Murray obviously, and anything else gets a brief mention when there's Scottish success. So not often.
I'd guess that well over 90% of the media space is football.0 -
A: Football, Olympics
You get extensive (mainstream) coverage even when it's not British
B: Rugby Union, Boxing, F1, Tennis, Golf, Cricket
You get some coverage when there's no British involvement, and quite a lot when there is
C: Everything else
You get no coverage at all unless there is British involvement0 -
I hate the way people support their teams as if it's some kind of army. Football is just shite, played by people who have sh1t hands. Apart from Goalies who have sh1tter feet than hands. If you have sh1t feet and hands and can just run about a bit you become a Ref.
Sh1t! If I was Father Christmas I wouldn't deliver footballs and I wouldn't have given Murray a racket either!
I would still bone Judy Murray though. She turned up!0 -

It does give you the chance to consort with one if the movers and shakers in British tennis, but I wouldn't have said boning Judy Murray is that big a deal. It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.0 -

Horse racing for the Grand National maybe. Everything else is just something drunks watch in the bookies isn't it?0 -

Pah! Infidel!
Horse racing is the sport of kings. The Grand National is a freak show for those that know fck all about it. In some ways paralleling the Tour.
Like cycling in the old days, I quite like that most people are ignorant of horse racing. Leaves it to people who actually love the game. It's a little like wrestling a gorilla. You don't quit when you're tired. You quit when the gorilla is tired.0 -

What are the obvious reasons?
People will talk about Leicester's season years from now. Wales (not to belittle the achievement too much) got to the semi-final of a fairly mediocre tournament.
A) It's a team made up entirely of British nationals (at least, the athletes). Isn't that kinda the point of SPOTY? Hence the 'international award'
It was a similar David v Goliath story but on an international scale - and arguably a bigger one, given the difference in pools of talent.
and yet they still contrived to lose to an England side that most pundits rated as one of the worst for years, which given recent history of the teams performances is saying something, basically they beat one good team,Belgium, you dont win a championship by beating just one good team,0 -

Great race, just too many punters. And they've watered it down too much going to the four day schedule. The support card for the gold cup isn't good enough. It's a little like wrestling a gorilla. You don't quit when you're tired. You quit when the gorilla is tired.0 -

Chap in my office. Mega posh. Only bets on Cheltenham.
Every year, he puts down maybe £200 odd and walks away with over £1,500.
And it's not bragging - I've seen the bets he puts on.
Outrageous.0 -

That's the right way to do it. He'll have been following those horses all year.

Yeah I've started betting on the spring classics for the same reason.
Some bizarre odds out there. Has Gasparotto for LBL at 120/1 IIRC
I bet with very small amounts but am up over twice what I've staked cumutaivtely.
Edit: So about £40...0 -
A friend used to own a horse and give me a tinkle every time it was in a race and it was basically a dead cert - made a nice couple of quid.
Never betted apart from then apart from then as I have inherent bad luck and no money ......Postby team47b » Sun Jun 28, 2015 11:53 am

The cycling betting market is quite illiquid so there can be some bargains to be had. I remember backing Schumacher at 65-1 to win a TT in the tour. I only did that because some pundit before the race said he was his favourite to win. I can't think of another sport where I could get such high odds on a pundit's first choice.0 -
They're getting narrower mind, and personally, betting on smaller races is a bit of a mugs game because not everyone's in it to win it...0

As Richie Benaud used to say, "Never bet on anything that can talk".It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.0
