quality from marina hyde on fury...stuff
The problem for the Guardian is not that he says what he thinks, it's that they don't like what he thinks so (to them) he shouldn't say it. If he'd said 'Anyone who disagrees with gay marriage is a tw@t, I say what I think' they would love him.
BTW this is no way an endorsement of what he says.
If you disagree with what someone says, then chances are you'll disagree with them - especially when they say something you find disagreeable. That's how it works, isn't it?0 -
The problem I think is that the BBC have named it Sports "Personality". And we all have differing opinions of what that means.
No we don't. In this context it means famous person. That's it. We only have this stupid "he has no personality" nonsense - every single bloody year - because people are stupid and can't grasp this simple fact.
personality
noun
1.
aathe combination of characteristics or qualities that form an individual's distinctive character.
"she had a sunny personality that was very engaging"
2.
a celebrity or famous person.
"an official opening by a famous personality"
If the BBC want to waste money on that they are welcome to, its not my money they are spending.
If you can become famous without ever achieving anything apart from popularity you should be on Soap TV personality of the year.
Surely to win a Sports award you need to be the highest achieving Sports person, not just the one favoured by the masses?
For example. Cycling personality of the year. Sagan.
Best cyclist of the year???? I am sure we could all list a lot of other contenders and argue their case.
Who wants to tell him?"In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

Ok smart arse. I'll rephrase:
When I pay my builder for labour, I have no say over what he does with that money.
In the same way once I've bought and obtained a snickers from the newsagent, I can't tell the newsagent what to do with the proceeds.
Honestly. You're hard work Rich.0 -
Disgruntledgoat made the point that it was their money but they are spending our money. It's us that fund the BBC. What they spend it on it terms of programming is a very subjective area and one that has even been under political criticism for eons.
We, the public have a right to question how they spend the license fee. What you are saying Rick goes against the more egalitarian views you have expressed in other threads (Re.: Vote Corbyn and save...) so you'll forgive me if i'm a tad puzzled by your comment.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -

What happens if you're forced to buy the Snickers by the government because you want to buy a Yorkie? And the government has specifically chartered the Snickers maker to make it how the people want?
Remember, in your analogy the newsagent and the Snickers maker are the same people. It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.0 -
We the public do have a say in how the BBC spends its money. Through several channels:
- Using it. Viewership/listening numbers do drive BBC programming.
- The license fee (as agreed by our government via elected representatives in parliament)
- Requirements as laid out in the Royal Charter (as agreed by our government via elected representatives in parliament)
- Feedback. Through programmes such as Feedback.
Going back to SPOTY - don't like it, don't watch it. The BBC provides plenty of other programming for you - particularly with the iplayer. I don't like loads on the BBC, but it also produces plenty of radio/tv/web that I find invaluable.
And keep in mind:

Yes. Bring back Hi De Hi.
You've got those ol' rose-tinted specs on if you try to position the BBC only presenting quality programming on BBC1 and 2, 20 years ago. For every Pride & Prejudice, there was a Keeping Up Appearances. Plenty of dross to balance out the good stuff. Same as now.0 -

Quite. Although BBC3 does plumb new depths from time to time. The kids' channels are great though and far exceed what was previously on 1 and 2.0 -

BBC3 is going all digital and taking a big budget cut next year (something like £75m to £25m or similar from memory).
It's sometimes OK, but yeah, usually pants.0 -

My point was that it's al of our money. Well, not mine because I don't live in the UK and I went through a refusnik phase with TV licensing when they made celebrity dog school and a live fake wedding between Dale Winton and Nell McAndrew"In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

I'd encourage everyone else to also throw their support behind an individual sportsman who gave so much for a team event this year0
