As an aside, no place for Joe Root? England would've been quite shoot without his batting this year.
They weren't very good with his batting, they were just lucky Australia were worse...It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.0 -

That was a hell of a race she rode, all in all.0 -

Quite. Although, they were decent in the UAE (was expecting it to be a walk in the park for Pakistan). Like the 2013 summer Ashes, could've easily ended up a drawn series with some luck.0 -
She has achieved a lot more than Froome this year.
Has she? Froome may have 'only' won the Tour but in doing so he beat a really high quality field. He beat every single active Grand Tour winner*, four of which filled the rest of the top five and have 12 GTs wins between them. And it was a repeat success.
(*i consider Wiggins and Horner semi-retired.)
He also won Critérium du Dauphiné and Vuelta a Andalucía.
Separately, he gets bonus marks from me for turning up at the Vuelta.0 -
It's called the Sports Personality of the Year Award. Actual achievement during the year is only part of the story, another component is having a personality and a bit part is having public recognition and that they like you.
Frankly its a pointless award and I don't know why we get our knickers in a twist each year.0 -
Odds from Bet 365 are interesting. Lucy Bronze shorter than Mo Farah.

Kevin Sinfield 18
Chris Froome 50
Lucy Bronze 66
Mo Farah 80
Greg Rutherford 150
Adam Peaty 150
Lizzie Armitstead 200

Cycling had its SPOTY purple patch 2008-12 with Hoy, Cav & Wiggins. Aint likely to be another cyclist winner for a while, I reckon0 -
Underestimate Kevin Sinfield at your peril. Rugby League fans are an evangelical bunch and they'll vote in their numbers, even non-Leeds fans. He'll be top three I reckon.
Sinfield for me. A world class player for years, a great leader abs an inspiration off the field too."In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

And unfortunately, dedicating your life to becoming a world class sportsperson isn't necessarily compatible with developing a world class personality. Most of the SPOTY winners aren't exactly Oscar Wilde are they...
Not that that's particularly a bad thing, they're supposed to be world class sportspeople not famous wits after all. It just seems a bit silly to have a competition for which incredibly single minded, dedicated and probably slightly OCD sportsperson has the least weird personality.0 -
I had absolutely no idea who Kevin Sinfield was until I read this thread.
We all know its going to be Andy Murray anyway.0 -

I think its wiggins becomes GBs most decorated olympian he could be in with a shout next year. As for this year I would prefer Lizzie to win over Froome, never warmed to Froome not sure if its because his riding style or personality just wasn't all that bothered about him doing well when watching the Tour. However I think Murray will win, he carried them to the Davis cup win and with it being recent it is in people minds.0 -
Andy Murray should be disqualified on the grounds that he doesn't have a personality.0

They just had the BT Action Woman awards on BT SPort. Winners were the England ladies soccer team that got knocked out in the semi final of their world cup - a bunch of losers in other words.
At least Rachel Atherton and Lizzie Amistead were nominated along with a few other winners.
Says it all about these type of awards that winners in sport don't win them but a bunch of losers win win due to politics.0 -

actually this is the most annoying thing about BBC SPOTY, not the winners or the endless debate about who should have been shortlisted, its that we go through this stupid thing every year with comedians doing the oh but they havent got a "personality" so cant win it, and everyone else having to explain its got nothing to do with "personality", in the 50s when this thing was invented thats just what they called people who were well known celebrities!!!! you were a TV personality if you were famous and on the tele and you were a sports personality if you were famous and doing sports.
gawd its enough to make you want to watch Xfactor
and Lizzie should win, but she wont because hardly anyone outside of cycling knows her.0 -

i think been nominated is a massive, and well deserved, achievement for him.
if he did somehow win, i wonder if they would end the public vote going forward? when saints won the team prize in about 2008 the public vote was changed to a panel vote. john "tosspot" inverdale said there were "suspicious voting patterns in the north" ie people who like rugby league and thought saints deserved it voted for them, the scoundrels "Unfortunately these days a lot of people don’t understand the real quality of a bike" Ernesto Colnago0 -

The problem with sports people today is that they have to deal with a print/internet media that are desperate for scandal.
When he was just 19 he did and interview alongside Tim Henman. They talked about the football World Cup, Henman took the p1ss about Scotland not being there, Murray joked he'd support whoever England were playing. That got blown up by The Sun (who didn;t do the interview) and others as 'Murray hates England'. It stuck with him for years. Utter BS. So you can see why the defences go up around the media. You only get to see the sportsman.
It's the same with most top sportsmen - they speak in dull cliches as a defence mechanism. Often those with 'personality' are actually bellends who can't self-censor.Twitter: @RichN950 -
Tennarse will do SPOTY what it does to my mind :evil:Rule #5 // Harden The Feck Up.
Rule #9 // If you are out riding in bad weather, it means you are a badass. Period.
Rule #12 // The correct number of bikes to own is n+1.
Rule #42 // A bike race shall never be preceded with a swim and/or followed by a run.0 -
That's all very well Rich but he comes over as dull and there's resentment in his tone as if he doesn't want to speak to the press at all.
It's a mute point because the consensus is that it sin't about personality, it's about achievement (dressed up by the BBC).seanoconn - gruagach craic!0
