(Re)watching Reservoir Dogs that I recorded ages ago. I’ve only ever seen it in full once, on a dodgy video copy not long after it’s original release when it was banned on video. I can’t believe it is 30 years old now!

Still comes up on recommended films to re-watch. Is it worth another watch?

An Irish Goodbye on iPlayer. Breathtakingly beautiful. Well worth 25 minutes of anyone’s time.

    This.

Didn’t have time to watch it all and I think it needs concentration as the dialogue is so important to the plot (you never really see what actually happens on the robbery). It has aged well I think.

Finally watched Top Gun Maverick. I’ve only seen the original a couple of times but still enjoyed the cheesy homage. Surprised George Lucas hasn’t sued them for stealing the whole attack on the Death Star sequence from the original Star Wars and basing an entire film on it though.

Ha ha, I hadn't thought of that...

I still can't work out why they experience such intense G force for the whole climb out though. Why doesn't it max as they change from dive to climb and then lessen and lessen as they slow down (and start getting shot at by super missiles. Won't be able to get away with that make-believe post Ukraine...)

About 30mins into the Whale. Wasn’t a film I was immediately attracted to but glad I’ve started. Brendan Fraser is excellent and very likeable.

Although Lucas himself said that sequence was heavily influenced by The Dambusters

    This week's cinema reviews.

Shazam 2. Standard super hero fare. By now they're all the same. Bad guy wants to get the McGuffin so they can rule the world as a tyrant. Hero fights back but falls short. Hero then finds a cunning plan usually involving either a Checkov's gun or a Deus Ex Machina. This involves a quest of some sort, before returning to triumph. It's OK. ***

John Wick Chapter 4. It's long (2h 50), the plot is so thin it barely exists and it has a remote relationship to the realities of human physiology. But go with it on its own terms. I thought it was great. It's relentless action, made by stuntmen so fight scenes are like a violent ballet. All style over substance. But what style. It's filmed with such panache. It looks great, the soundtrack, the locations, the characters, the dog, the staircase. It does something outrageous in the third act, but pulls it off. It's the film equivalent of putting hot sauce on all your food. The Raid with a big budget. The best John Wick. I think it maybe my favourite of the year so far, but not for everyone. *****.

John Wick, sorry to those who liked it. Load of twaddle.
Only really went as my eldest was home and he and number 2 child wanted to see it. Didn’t want to miss a family do.
I knew what it was and to a degree can try and go along for the ride but it’s just silly.
I can ignore the statistical improbability of several hundred people failing to kill one person but gravity…

    Everything, everywhere, all at once.
On Amazon prime (included in, not extra)
Mrs watched it with a friend last weekend and didn’t like it, I watched last night and thought it was really good.

Being a multiverse film, there are obviously sci-if themes that may or may not make sense but the thing I really liked is it doesn’t go overboard on this theme. It is very much a setting interwoven into the story rather than the sole focus of the film. It’s not trying to be stupidly clever in the way a movie like Tenet does. You can go along for the ride and enjoy without feeling you need to unravel what is happening and the significance of an event.

It’s a human story, the characters are normal people, it’s funny, it’s got action (but not John Wick stupid) and it definitely feels original. I’d recommend watching it.

The new Shazam. Went yesterday for a family birthday.

If you don’t like superhero stuff then obviously avoid.

First one was surprisingly original in the accidental hero sort of way whereas this one lacks that spark of originality and falls into more standard superhero fare.

However, it is well done and plenty of laughs along the way. Enjoyable pap but not essential viewing.

“Nobody” on Netflix. Saul Goodman goes all Bruce Willis/Rambo. I enjoyed it for what it was.

Air: Ben Affleck directs Matt Damon. This is the story of how Nike attracted Michael Jordan and launched the Air Jordan. A story of a sports sponsorship where Nike are an underdog shouldn't really work, but it does. I liked it a lot. All the cast are excellent, particularly Damon as a Nike talent spotter and Viola Davis as Jordan's mother. It has humour. It even mentions Nike's use Asian labour. Damon gets to deliver a terrific speech. And a good dose of 80s nostalgia. Made by Amazon, so likely on Prime soon. ****

Operation Fortune: Now I know the question you have all been asking is what if Guy Ritchie had directed Mission Impossible. Well here's your answer. It was enjoyable enough, but I really can't remember a much about it, except I had moderate fun. All I specifically remember is Hugh Grant doing another one of his scene chewing villains. This one is basically repurposing his character from The Gentleman to a billionaire arms dealer. But he's the best thing. On Amazon Prime now. ***

Everything everywhere all at once. Taken multiple attempts over the past couple of months to actually finish and only persisted because of the Oscar buzz. Good performances but with any multiverse movie, a little perplexing.

Watched this on Saturday. Well watched most of it before succumbing to much needed sleep. It was entertaining and interesting, well the bits I saw. it was also very very confusing. It was amusing too. I must watch the last half hour.

Did I think it worthy of all the accolades it won? Probably not. Its good but not that good.
Watched it last night, well acted and compelling although weird and confusing. Acting was good, not up to all the hype though.

Renfield (in cinemas): Horror comedy. Nicholas Hoult as Dracula's familiar Renfield who wants to escape his toxic relationship. Nicolas Cage plays Dracula. I enjoyed this a lot. The cast are spot on, there are many laughs, the action is done well, some horror gore if that's your thing.. ****

    Nope on Sky last night.

Alien encounter / horror set on a present day ranch.
Intriguing but slow and I personally found the dialogue very indiscernible for large stretches (probably my hearing though).

When it gets moving, it’s OK. It’s well made, It doesn’t feel formulaic but not a must see.

Yeah, I was disappointed by it as I've liked Jordan Peele's previous two (Get Out, Us) and I'm not a horror fan. This was more a general monster film and it didn't really work for me. The chimp subplot was a bit odd. I liked Daniel Kaluuya though. He's always good.

Cage should be perfect as a comedic Dracula. Wasn’t too enthused by the trailer as Cage didn’t seem to feature heavily but will give it a go.

The chimp subplot was totally over my head. I really struggled to hear the dialogue that explained it so just went along for the ride. I probably should have tried subtitles but I can normally hear the TV OK. I didn’t feel I really needed to grasp all the fine points of the plot.

Currently watching He Who Dares: Downing Street Seige on Prime. It’s a sequel to a film I’ve never watched and so far in contention for the worst film I’ve ever seen. Highlights so far are:

The hero apparently being an SAS Major but walking around in a uniform with corporal’s stripes.

The terrorist team on their way to take over Downing Street on a double decker bus with a stripper whose only purpose appears to be to have a topless woman. She then gets shot to allow a close up shot of her breasts.

Terrorists sexy girlfriend walking around the obligatory action film female star uniform of skin tight PVC trousers who stands right in front of the blast when the front door of number 10 gets blown off without her hair even getting disturbed.

Access to number 10 being gained by simply climbing over a wall - if only the IRA had though of that.

When you think how many aspiring actors can’t get work with some of them being quite good it baffles me how any of these got a job (well, having seen the PVC trousers I get how the terrorist’s girlfriend got the job). The main terrorist is trying the wisecracking Bond villain routine but doesn’t have the script or acting ability.

Still watching while I try to work out if it falls into the ‘so bad it’s good’ category but at present I’m leaning to so bad it’s utter shite.

Yeah, it's really hard to find a decent film on there. They also have a habit of having sequels (often multiple sequels) but not the original.

Just watched the trailer (which, incidentally, is quite bloody for a trailer.)

Said trailer has the footage of the front door being blown 'orf. She'd be bloody lucky to survive that IRL.

Prime’s content format is so bad, is it deliberately so? Surely they could do better.

I was just looking for something to watch while eating lunch and if it had been any good I would have finished it in the evening so didn't do any detailed research. Even so I was amazed at how bad it was, it's amazing that actors / writers / producers producing stuff that bad get work in the first place let alone the chance to make a sequel.
