  • Following the conclusion of 'The Last of Us' :'( , finally got round to watching 'A Quiet Place'.
A novel take on the Zombie/Infection genre; through casting a hearing impaired actor and having this as an integral facet of the plot.
If you appreciated the 'wider' themes of TLOU, I'd recommend it.

    Watched the Bombardment.

    can't decide if it's 3 or 4 stars.

Premise is simple as mentioned on the thread - occupied Denmark, local resistance ask the brits to bomb the local gestapo HQ but the raid goes wrong and the brits end up bombing a local school. A real story unfortunately.

It's definitely done well. I guess my problem with it is that the 3 or 4 story lines that they run with have no obvious relation to each other other than the above story, and so it's pretty clear from the start that that's how it's going to end up (why else am i spending a lot of time flicking between a few children and a british bomber pilot looking moody?)

That does neuter the tension somewhat, and you feel slightly like you're being set up for the emotional wrench when the disaster does strike.

Nonetheless its done well, though maybe I'm not best placed as half the kids in the story look just like mine...

Everything everywhere all at once. Taken multiple attempts over the past couple of months to actually finish and only persisted because of the Oscar buzz. Good performances but with any multiverse movie, a little perplexing.

Watched this on Saturday. Well watched most of it before succumbing to much needed sleep. It was entertaining and interesting, well the bits I saw. it was also very very confusing. It was amusing too. I must watch the last half hour.

Did I think it worthy of all the accolades it won? Probably not. Its good but not that good.

    Sometimes. Maybe. Possibly.

    Need help remembering a film.
American movie, last 5 years. A group of strangers wake up in a field, are left some weapons and are then hunted by the wealthy/people paying to hunt humans?

The Hunt. Remember a wooden crate with weapons inside and one of the cast (you'd think was a main character) got wiped out unusually quickly?

Yes, I love when a big name actors character gets wiped out totally unexpectedly. Much better to have genuine unexpected moments than the predictable Star Trek different coloured sweater = certain death.

The Lost City (not a great movie) manages the same didn’t see that coming moment.

Yeah agree, it was a 'no way' bit that stood out. I also remember it being enjoyable with some decent dark humour and gory deaths etc.

I started watching that but don't recall finishing it. Think I may have mentioned it here at the time though. Felt similar to that Jean-Claude Van Damme film (Hard Target?).

I suppose it's a similar storyline where the main character takes out all use bad guys and turns out to be a real (unexpected, underdog) badass hero.
Definately worth a watch and I'd happily watch it again.

    A Quiet Place 2

Basically a rehash of the first, without advancing the storyline. Watchable, but certainly tame.

Watched the Luther film. Never watched the TV series, although I suspect I'd like it.

    6/10. Deeply meh.

It's just a hill. Get over it.

I should join this thread as I go to the cinema a lot. There's a Cineworld opposite my office.

Here's the last two weeks' viewing

65 - 65 million years ago human like aliens crash land on earth and have to dodge dinosaurs to get to an escape vessel. The biggest load of sci-fi nonsense since Moonfall. **

Champions - Basketball coach Woody Harrelson gets fired and busted for drink driving and sentenced to community service coaching a special needs team. This was actually good. Not patronising. Inclusive casting who are given proper roles. Not too cheesy. Recommend ****

Dungeons & Dragons (pre-release preview). A lot better than you would expect. Tolkien type stuff but done in a Guardians of the Galaxy style. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would ***

Allelujah - Set in a small Yorkshire geriatric hospital. Top notch cast, but preachy and undermined by a twist that wasn't earned at all mascarding as some sort of political analogy. While I may be sympathetic to its themes, it's crap. **

Rye Lane - RomCom set in Peckham. RomComs aren't really my thing but I really liked this one as it had engaging leads, was genuinely funny and used its locations well. Features a 30 second 'Is that who I think it is?' cameo. Recommend ****

Coming up this week. Shazam 2, John Wick 4 and Air.

I should have added two films still in cinemas

Creed 3 - Effectively Rocky 9 and the first with no reference to Stallone. More of the same distinguished by an interesting directorial choice in the final fight, Jonathan Majors (the best thing in the disappointing AntMan 3) and seeing Tony Bellew again ***

Cocaine Bear - Based (very loosely) on a true story. It sounds daft. It is daft. But it's classic B movie fodder. Silly but entertaining. Ray Liotta's final film. 'Ever since I can remember wanted to sell coke to a bear' ***

Is that 'bear' as in a gay sense of the term? I've known plenty of 'cocaine bears'! ;)

Having Seema few trailers...no. a bear in the sense of "Book em Lou, one count of being a bear!"

No, it's a real bear. Based on an actual bear. Info about the real bear: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cocaine_Bear_(bear)

    .

I have to agree with this. We went to see this for no more reason than to fill a couple of hours on Saturday afternoon. It was drifting along quite nicely then completely telegraphed a twist that grated with the message the film seemed to be putting across. The conclusion scene seemed a little clumsy (albeit noble) as an addition which made me wonder if it was part of the original.

Jesus Christ Superstar was on BBC2 Saturday. I quite enjoy it, in a trashy kind of way.
Anyhow, something was bugging me about Pilate...

    Mr Jones, on iplayer.
based on true story of civil servant turned journalist who travels to Moscow and Ukraine in 1930s Stalinist Russia.
Grim and not very believable as presented, but an interesting reminder of my very distant 'O' level C20 history. Overall a decent watch.

(Re)watching Reservoir Dogs that I recorded ages ago. I’ve only ever seen it in full once, on a dodgy video copy not long after it’s original release when it was banned on video. I can’t believe it is 30 years old now!
