Nibz and the Astana DS in question have given interview to GdS and Eurosport (both for tomorrow) in which they 'explain' what happened

I'm plumping for 'UCI biased against Astana cos they wanted them off WT but were thwarted by that nice Licence Commission', coupled with 'it's common practice for a car to be help a rider back after a crash, and everyone does it'*

*tho not at warp speed uphill with the DS flooring the pedals and with TV helicopter directly ahead, perhaps
"I drove up to Vincenzo to tell have a chat to him and his handlebars got caught in the wing mirror. Our mechanic suggested that we speed up and see if that would dislodge them. It took a bit of time and we had to get up to about 50mph, but in the end it worked."

    Actual Astana statement
Astana Pro Team riders Paolo Tiralongo, Fabio Aru, Vincenzo Nibali and Diego Rosa crashed on Sunday during the live television broadcast of the second stage of the Vuelta a España -

Tiralongo fell on his left cheek and temple and received first aid from the race doctor immediately after the crash and later more than 20 stitches to sew up his face -

Rosa, Aru and Nibali all received superficial skin abrasions to their upper and lower legs -

All totaled more than two dozen riders in the peloton also crashed heavily at more than 60kph with around 30km remaining in the stage -

Aru, Nibali and Tiralongo all exchanged their bicycles after the crash and began chasing to catch the speeding peloton -

Nibali called for a replacement water bottle and was filmed by television cameras in a race helicopter as Astana Pro Team Director Sportif Alexander Sheffer towed him for more than five seconds to rejoin the chasing group with around 20km to the finish -

Nibali rejoined the main peloton with 10km to go -

For this illegal assistance, race jury officials took the unusual and severe step to expel Nibali and Sheffer from the Vuelta a España and to remove the team's second vehicle from competition for two days -

Astana Pro Team is sorry for the error, and apologizes to the peloton and race organizers for the harm these televised images caused to professional cycling -

Aru and Rosa will start stage three, Tiralongo is scheduled to start and will undergo more medical checks to his injuries before resuming the Vuelta a España -

The bold bit (my bolding) is verifiably incorrect. He was on the front of the chase group and drove away from it. But they seem to be accepting their medicine - so we move on.

I should be surprised but I'm not.

Also - Tiralongo is scheduled to start. Are they serious?

Cars are the new beef.... Niabli "escaping" chase group.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClwG4DD7sbY&feature=youtu.be
That's not even subtle. It's right in front of a huge group of riders.
Thats incredible...!! Hooks onto the car and shoots off!!

Even more incredible that FF thinks its acceptable to cheat!
'Performance analysis and Froome not being clean was a media driven story. I haven’t heard one guy in the peloton say a negative thing about Froome, and I haven’t heard a single person in the peloton suggest Froome isn’t clean.' TSP

Nibali said 'as the car dropped back to give me a bottle it lost power so I accelerated and pushed it along to bump start it before chasing back to the bunch'

This actually wouldn't be the least beluevable statement Nibali has made this season.

Not wishing to defend the indefensible but I think they should just be dishing out discretionary time penalties for this offence. This deserved a biggy such as 10 mins as he was intent on heading straight back to the front of the race. However, regular sticky bottles magic spanners etc can then be ignored or given minor penalties within the law.

I'll miss Nibs, I like his style of riding (not the car assisted bit)

Wondered why I missed it live so I checked the British Eurosport footage I had on Tivo.

BE leave coverage for an ad break at 17.6km and return at 15.6km (leader's distance from the finish). Nibali is now on a uphill drag being pulled along by a team mate with the back of the line of teams cars behind the peloton visible ahead.

The International Eurosport YouTube footage shows Nibali grabbing the team car at 15.8km (hence BE missing it) and leaving the astonished group of chasers behind. At that point he's roughly 2.13 behind the leader and 1.33 behind the group of GC favourites (based on the timings at the sprint point at the top of the climb into Alora which they've not long been through).

Nibali's "assistance" allows him to cut that 1.33 gap down enough to smell the exhaust fumes of the convoy which suggests that he's lucky the helicopter footage cuts away so quickly.

It's curious a figure of 100m was used. It was more than that in the video and Nibs still couldn't get rid of the glue as the car exited frame right faster than the speed the helicopter was flying.

I think it's just us here today Bob.

Hehe, I was meant to be out on my bike but it's raining and my legs hurt from doing Colombiere and Aravis yesterday...

It's fine to take the day off. Good work yesterday. I climbed the Côte d'Hilversum which peaks at a mighty 39m.
Cool rice I'll be riding tabletop mountain near Laren several times this week, if my cloggie was better I'd knoiw the rewal name!
    Turned out nice again!

Thing is, that's the regulation. A few of us thought Portes penalty was harsh, but the regs stated 2mins. Same with this, the regs state that it's disqualification, nothing less. At the time the consensus seemed to be that he should have known. Ditto Nibs ( and the DS!).

Could be a translation thing as the main group were also chasing a group at that time. They did not catch the breakaway till after Nibz joined.

As a Nibz fan I can't argue with the verdict. What was he thinking? He is known to act impulsively tho'.

But it was more than 5 seconds - they just don't say how much more, or indeed what they are defining as the chasing group...

What's the relevance of the 5 seconds? Is that seen as a cut-off (can't say I've seen anything this blatant before).

They would've been better off saying "We pulled alongside Nibali for a chat and he clung on to the car. We told him to let go or he would be disqualified but he refused, even when we accelerated quickly to try and shake him off. It's like the guy didn't want to be in the race at all!"

By making it the only time reference readers will start to assume it was a 5 second tow. Superb spin, nothing to do with anything else.

I've just bought a Bianchi for less than the cost a sandwich a day, that's the spin I'm using at home.

In the end just did a 25km spin up through Sixt to Frenalay, got extremely wet... Glad I bought the Gabba with me!

How these guys descend mountain roads in the wet at the speeds they do is beyond me, I was a right pussy on the way back.

If only you'd had disc brakes...

Shame Nibs is out. But he and his DS were idiots, rules are rules etc. etc. I'm thinking that the team were trying to make up for Aru getting a spare bike before him. Either way it was clearly illegal.

Tiralongo pic is horrendous. Hope he heals up well.

Looks like OGE are continuing their strong first week at a GT tactic. Pumped for Chaves!

Talansky went down yesterday. I think he was the Cannondale rider that couldn't hold on to Nibali's wheel/car when he 'attacked'. He finished over three minutes down on the stage.

He's a right conundrum, is Talansky

Not sure he'll be anything else as long as he's with Garmindale

Astana are looking at being a bit more subtle next time, there's no sign of a sticky bottle in this one:
