La Vuelta 2015 S#1 - Puerto Banús / Marbella **SPOILERS**
Do we usually have individual threads for the Vuelta stages?
Puerto Banús / Marbella - Team Time Trial 7.4 km
It is along the coast and is as flat as a pancake
Looks a bit silly - but last years 12k TTT had Movistar put upto a minute on other teams - and this route looks primed for accidents
It looks from the map as if they are running along the harbour wall
and across some sandy board walks. Team time trial on Spring Classic bikes?

Quite a few riders tweeting their concerns about the surface for this. Looks more like sand than tarmac in places...0

Google maps street view has much of the course and the ground looks to be compacted sandy gravel. TBH it looks just like many of the canal paths in and around London. I love riding on that stuff - but it is not that fast, braking can be an issue, and the day after it rains it is as bumpy as hell. Also some the street furniture will have to go - there are bollards designed to keep cars off the path which are only a metre or so apart0
-
If they have to run to start with, maybe CX bikes are needed?
Interesting point made by INRNG. Teams only just seeing the course for the first time today, and if it was the Tour they would have reconned in March0 -
Expect a course change on stage 1.

Expect to see him at the fron tof the Trek line doing the stupid hand wavy thing he does when he wants to go all Hinault and wants everyone to stop riding/stop riding in a way that means he can't win."In many ways, my story was that of a raging, Christ-like figure who hauled himself off the cross, looked up at the Romans with blood in his eyes and said 'My turn, sock cookers'"

Stupid stage. Runs the risk of eliminating a contender through bad luck.
This is a bike race not a circus act. It's a little like wrestling a gorilla. You don't quit when you're tired. You quit when the gorilla is tired.0 -

Now announced, apparently....
"The recorded time will be counted for the team classification and not for the individual general

Will there still be a cut-off time I wonder 40 pct in a team time trial is normally completely doable unless you are too injured to sensibly continue - but my sums make this under 2 and a half minutes which is just a fall, feeling shakey for a moment, then a poor bike change0 -
Official statement :
The Technical Jury , having received the concerns of teams and riders and after an inspection of the course with the technical director of the race, and after obtaining the agreement of the UCI has decided :
1. The stage will be held on the planned route .
2. The recorded time will be counted for the team classification and not for the individual general classification.
3. At the end of the stage equipment that you have made the best time will be submitted to the protocol.

Well if I'd known that I'd have changed my PTP pick. I can't see the GC guys risking anything now so it should be one of the other teams that gets it. Goodness knows how they got to a day before the race before realising what a silly idea this was.0

I'm surprised all the fuss is about the stage 1 TTT. The teams clearly haven't recced Caminito del Rey, the stage 2 finish:
