Can anyone enlighten me on what a golden kilometre is?

Its new shizz. All bonus sprints occur within a 1km stretch.

At 160km (23km from the finish) there will be a Gouden Kilometer so will be interesting to see how the sprinters and/or GC riders play this.

  • Interested to see how this is going to work.

Peloton chasing the break in time for the golden kilometre
  • That golden kilometre reminds me of training on the track and sprinting to the whistle. Doug Dailey blew it about every 10 seconds

Well it was entertaining. Bit too gimmicky to want it in other races though.

What I have missed? Did anyone get points / prizes / time bonuses in more than one golden km sprint?

Admittedly, I don't know how this went or what effect it will have, but at first glance this looks like a big pile of artificial toss.

Why not give them a motor they can use in specific sections of the race?
It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.

I think the race has finished. Spoiler thread doesn't make it clear who won though.

Your use of the Dutch word Gouden made me imagine a 'Gouda Kilometre' where riders have to bunny hop over cheeses rolled down a slight incline in a fashion reminiscent of Donkey Kong.

  • If you look at the GC it is different from the stage order as the 4 in the break shared out the time second bonuses - including the hard working - and slightly gurning - Nico Denz at 21 years old. Boucher Fdj made a move with 1 km to go to the Golden Mile which was sensible as he might have got it all but to no avail

Denz looks a good deal - light and looks like he can time trial . He was riding for Chambery CF - Ag2Rs feeder team/school/concept - as an amateur and seemed solid . First WT race today. Another strong signing for the clued up Lavenu and the Chamery CF idea
THE FIGURES IN THE TRAINING CENTER EVERY YEAR ...
    - 15, the number of riders per class
    - From 19 to 23, the age of the group range
    - 20, the average weekly number of hours of sport
    - 25, the average weekly number of hours related to school
    - 900, the number of days of average annual competition
    - 300 000, the average number of kilometers traveled each year
    - 2.6, the average number of professional contracts signed each year

Currently Clement Chevrier and Pierre Roger Latour - who is destined for big things- amongst other graduates

I like it when Griepel doesn't win. He's a bit too boring for me to like.
It's not so much about winning, I just hate losing.

Speculation that a deal has been done so that Asselman will take all the golden sprints and 9s. This would give him a 5s lead in the GC, and the white leader's jersey if Viviani doesn't score at the end
  • TheBigBean
    TheBigBean Posts: 20,637
Asselman takes all the golden sprints (9s total). In the one second sprints, Gilbert takes the first, an Astana rider the 2nd and Gilbert the 3rd.

Bit silly, but good fun that Golden Kilometer; Gilbert and that Astana rider having a nice little battle.

So Gilbert looks pretty good for the GC; definitely up for it

Glad I'm not the only one that had no idea who the mystery Astana rider was!

Looking like it's going to be a sprint which isn't going to surprise anyone.

Edit - Cycling News says it was Grivko
