Cavendish may have volunteered?Seems odd to be using Cav to nurse Tony Martin.
No doubt he did. He likes to help out where he can, but from the following list is he really the best choice if the role is simply nursing? Maybe it is strategy to keep him out of trouble.

A bit strange to change the bike after the first cobbles. I guess the pace was too high before to change as expected. I suppose they ended up riding that pavé section on 23 mm tyres.Uran and Contador stop to change bikes.

I don't know what's worse about the Degenkolb hair advert, the awful cringe-ness of it or that he sounds exactly like a guy I work with
My issue is the same as every time I see him speak - his voice is wrong for his face.
