  • I picked one up in Cycle Surgery in London yesterday.

Not had a chance to use it yet, but managed to upload the detailed maps yesterday evening and will give it a try on the weekend if the weather holds.

I came across this industry buzz-word today, my first thoughts were of Evans and the absent 520...

Looks like the 520 is now in stock with Garmin themselves

I wonder if they are deliberately delaying supplying stock to shops in order to maximise their direct orders??
My LBS have been given a date of September 15th, similar estimation to the online stores.

I was looking for one yesterday for a mate and found them in stock on bike discount http://www.bike-discount.de/en/praesenz/search?q=garmin+520

Interesting I've ordered one from there in case they aren't lying about having them in!

They also have the bundle version at bikefast.co.uk , which is another German stockist, but the bundle is no good for me, I already have all the sensors.

Just sell the sensors on here, that's what I did. Break even.
  • I've ordered from bike-discount.de and apparently it's on it's way!

And now out of stock. Gutted, been trying to get one for a few weeks now.
  • KiNl0yAl.jpg

Finally got it! :D. Not really tried it properly other than setting up and a 10 minute rollers ride but it seems nice so far. Apart from having trouble with the out front mount, had to use a different one.

It was from bike-discount so Evans is getting cancelled :)

    Nice one!

Look forward to hearing your opinions of it when you have given it a thorough test.

Out of interest, what was the issue with the mount?
  • It was too loose on my bars as the attachment was bigger. I tried the smallest shim which then didn't fit! Thankfully I had bought a Garmin mount for when I briefly had a 510 and that fits perfectly.

  • The screen is much improved over the 510. Very easy to see without the backlight.

Cheers for the heads up, they also have the unit now in stock. £211 - £100 I got for my 800 :-)
  • Emailed Evans to cancel the order on Friday and just now get an email to say it's on the way. Argh!

Does that mean you'll be selling one?! I'm in the market.

No no. I'll either refuse delivery or just post it straight back.

Just bought myself a 520 (thereby contradicting myself about waiting for the bugs to be ironed out!) at 379 E for the full pack. That's £270.

Remarkably, my LBS in Quimper has them in stock. They got 20 of each, 20 just head unit and 20 pack. They have 8 and 6 left, after just a few days.

If anyone's interested, let me know and I'll pass on their name - they sell to the UK.

Oh and I'll be selling all the sensors and mounts (except HRM) from my kit.
  • Is there any way to automatically have the unit switch off the backlight when it's charging? As I plug it in on the sideboard but it leaves the screen on full brightness, and my wife complains that I've 'left it on'!

Is it just me or does the confirm button being at the top right and the back button and bottom right make no sense? I can't count the number of times I've pressed 'back' when I've meant to press 'ok'. They should be the other way around! Plus the lap and start buttons being on the front are really awkward, who thought that was a good idea?

I agree - those two buttons seem upside down to me, I'd prefer them to be swapped over.

I miss the touchscreen of the 510! I'd got used to just swiping a finger across the screen to move from one display to the next.

The side buttons are hard to reach and press on the 520, and it stresses the mount when you push them.

Also, the two buttons on the lower front are almost impossible to get to when on a Garmin outfront mount, and that's without winter gloves on!

Not really feeling the love at the moment.....

I use turn by turn every time I use a map because that means I can leave the unit on the stats page, which I like to see and more importantly extends the battery life by about 25-30%. It works for me 99% of the time, but occastionally does no turn by turn alerts - I think this may be when I have told it to follow the course before it has got a satellite lock and just telling it again to follow the course then restores the turn by turn alerts.

Having the maps on display constantly recalculating drains the battery - I think the effect of this is even more significant on the 1000 because of the extra info it has to redraw and display. Thankfully, it looks like the 520 has the best battery life on any Garmin unit for years though.

Turn by turn I find a bit confusing on the 810. I have just returned from three months touring using the 810 every day. One issue is that the unit seemed to use both the OSM maps I installed on the unit and the RwGPS instructions on the GPX files - one seemed to provide the turn by turn and the other provided the junction navigation pop up screen so sometimes one worked and not the other and vice versa. The main problem with Turn by Turn is that it appeared that you need to be on the route when you load the GPX - so if I started the day, half way through the route but a few hundred yards off it, the turn by turn would just hang on the beginning of the route. As you say, restarting the course solves the problem. I never found tunnels to be a problem unlike some.

As for battery life - I ran the 810 off a SON28 dynamo. I did muck around with various settings but my conclusion was that showing the map display had no notable impact on battery life (or recharging speed) compared to the other screens. The only thing that did change battery life was backlight settings. If I turned the backlight off, I would get about one percent of battery recharge every two minutes or so. With the backlight on full, the hub struggled to keep the unit at a fixed level of charge.

Now wondering about the new firmware. I had to roll back to a year old firmware in order for the 810 to work correctly on dynamo. I don't want a compulsory 'upgrade' that removes essential functionality for stuff that is just toy stuff for me.
    Faster than a tent.......

So what would you recommend I get. Currently I've a G500 which does everything I need but I have one problem with it... satellite drift which seems pretty sketchy at times. I realise all gps can have this problem but mine seems to be getting worse. I know the later G5xx models have better gps capability and use additional protocols so should be better in this respect.

I don't use or need mapping.. what would you get?

How is a new Garmin sh*t? I love and have loved all of mine.
Edge 500 and Forerunners are now sh*t though of course!

Agreed there is no real rush to get the latest one unless you don't have one at all, but then again, why not as long as you accept it will have teething troubles.

It turns out that now Wiggle are blatantly lying to customers and conning them.

    - Wiggle sends me an email to say the 520 is in stock
    - Wiggles website say +10 in stock
    - Wiggle quite happily take my order and bank details.
    - Then a parcel arrives today. With half the order,... No 520 inside !

This takes the p*ss. It's misleading and being disceptive to customers at best, blatant theft at worst.

I'm still waiting for Wiggle customer services to get back to me with an explanation.

    .

Not 'a' new Garmin - 'this' new Garmin.

I've got an 810 and it's great. I can't see a foreseeable need to upgrade because they're now creating drivers that cover their upper range of units. It's a solid but of kit.

I was about to post something similar, placed my order 28th and it is still showing as being processed. Not sure if any money has been taken though.

Wife is in the same situation and have a 520 on order for her.
There is no better option IMO.

I have recently got her an Edge 25 to try though, as it has all the connected features which was the main point in changing.
In theory it will do everything she needs, but she may not like the small screen. So may still end up getting the 520.

I still want the Edge 25 to replace the 500 though. I was planning to use the 500 as a spare/commute/off road device, but after having GLONASS and connected features its just too outdated even for that.
