Evans has updated my dispatch date to 1st August.

Don't hold your breath. And do let us know how all the bug fixes go......!

(Even though I am tempted to upgrade my 510)

How does following a trial work on the likes of the 510? I often plan out a ride before I start but half the time end up doing a route slightly different than planned, will it still pick me up and start following the route again if I leave it and join it again further down the line?

Yes. I used the breadcrumb trail on my 200 for a century at the weekend and was surprised how easy and clear it was to follow. I created the course from a route we did a few weeks ago, but we rode some of the route differently. It tells you when you go off-course, then you can see on the screen where the course actually is and head towards it at any point to rejoin and it will carry on as normal.

It's the first time I've used it and it's actually made me rethink getting a 520 completely, my mate had detailed mapping on his 810 and it's actually much easier to follow a course on the 200. The 520 now looks perfect for me, as others have said, if I want a detailed map I have an iPhone in my pocket that I can find anything on.

I think Garmin have made a mistake with the 20/25, I would have considered one for definite but the tiny screen is putting me off. If they'd kept it the size of the old 200 I'd have got a 25 instead.

Same here, did the same with the Edge 500 at the weekend. Created a route on bikehike.co.uk and added course points to show the turns, etc. Worked great, still took 2 wrong turns at a couple of weird t junctions, but it then told me if i was off course. Next time i will probably look at the route a bit better and add further course points so i don't go wrong.

Gives a turn-by-turn page, virtual partner pace and a basic route display.

Quite simply I don't want to sit at a computer and plot out each waypoint on Garmin Connect then plug the 520 in and transfer the file across. Every time I go out on my bike.

Also, as someone mentioned previously on here. Sometimes we don't stick to the plan and change the route mid ride. Some of my best rides have be improvised as we went along.

What I want is... when I'm at a junction in the middle of nowhere, is the map to show where I am and what's down the road to the left and where does the road to the right take me? Have an overall situational awareness of where I am in the area and what roads I can take.

That's exactly why I want a map on a (relatively small) device like the 520...
The only thing that keeps me away from the 520 is the limited space for maps.
    500 MB would be fine.

Evans is still saying 30th July, but worryingly some other sites are saying 7th September.

Well Evans was still saying 30th July until today (30th July!), now it's changed to 16th August.

Just cancel the order for now. I did a while back go get the money back. (Yes they charged even though there was no stock and it was pre-order).

Having said that, I just checked and yes, Evans have taken full payment, for a product they don't have in their possession, and don't know for certain when they will. Nice little earner that one.

Because we have been mislead (or lied) to get our money.
They shouldn't advertise dates that they can't deliver, nobody else advertised pre-ordering for 30 Jul.

Just out of interest I wonder where this stands from a legal point....
    - Evans advertisies something.
    - Evans takes our money for this.
    - Then Evans don't deliver what they said and what we paid for.

When I placed my order they were saying, 5th July! Not that I ever expected them to keep to that. Then 30th July and someone posted in their answers section saying was 30th July likely to be kept, and Evans staff said yes.

Then changed to the 16th August and today I now see it's 20th August. Someone has asked if this date is accurate, their reply: "The is the date that our supplier has given us." (sic)

To be fair we did know going in that it was a pre-order and the terms around that. At least the money is off my credit card now so I don't have to budget for that amount coming out at some random point.

The frustrating thing is that I'm wanting this to get some numbers based training done in the summer (if you can call it that) but that's already slipping away.

I'm surprised they debited the money for a product they don't have.

You would have thought they would have waited until the product is in stock and ready for dispatch.

But the cynic in me says I could have bought the Garmin 520 from elsewhere if Evans didn't take the money.

Wiggle is saying stock is expected Mid-September. You have to wonder if Wiggle is giving the correct date and Evans is giving the string us along date.

That's a bit dissapointing - I ordered a Garmin product from Rose, and it took around 6 weeks to come into stock, they kept me updated along the way, and only took payment when they despatched it.

No idea what you guys are paying at Evans, but Leisurelakesbikes have them for £240\£300, and TDF20 takes it down to £220\£280, plus 3% cashback through quidco knocks another £6.60\£8.40 off potentially, depending on whether it is including the VAT Amount.

Presumably the reason the delay is that they are still debugging it.

As Garmins are renowned for launch bugs, I wouldn't touch the first ones off the shelf with a bargepole.

They want you to trial and debug them for them for free.

I like the look of the 520, but I think I'll wait for a Wiggle or CR 10/15% deal this winter.

I just picked one up from the ride London expo.
Garmin guy said they will be with wiggle before anyone else but wiggle is showing mid September now.

    Doh!

I actually rode past that today, visiting a cousin who lives by green park. It was great seeing all the families riding around closed off roads but I couldn't face the crowds that were swarming around the bike park. Definitely would of changed my mind if it'd occurred to me there were goodies to be had! Bit dim on my part really... :(

The small date in the corner of Evans website has now been subtly changed to 02/09/2015

  • Just noticed that. Funny they don't email when the date changes.

Quite frustrating. Considering it was announced at the beginning of June, two months ago.

Wiggle now says late August when they used to say mid-September.

It doesn't make sense Garmin launching half finished products. Why would they launch a product without testing it and being 100% satisfied? I mean the universe went millions of years without the Garmin 520, so testing and development before launch isn't going to make much difference in the grand scheme of things. Unless a rival is launching a similar product at the same time and you want to get on the market first?

I guess if you look at it from their point of view - why spend money thoroughly testing a product when users can do that for you free of charge - then it does make sense.
Unfortunately it does seem that Garmin take this approach. The last few edge devices have been plagued with bugs, many of which are yet to be resolved. I'm keeping my fingers crossed the 520 breaks this trend, but i will be holding back ordering one for the first few months given their history.

On a note about the availability, amazon actually say 2016! BUT Garmin shop now says the bundle version is 4-7 days processing time, so its obviously very close.
  • I got an email from Evans yesterday saying 22nd August. But the website still says 2nd September.

Showing as 7 days delivery on the Garmin website
  • Showing as 7 days delivery on the Garmin website

It's showing the bundle as 7-10 days but device only as 3-5 weeks.

It getting it in a week or so means spending extra on the sensors then that's fine, they can be spares, or I could sell them on.
  • Now saying 8th September.

I know Garmin are shipping them as I have seen lots of posts with people's first impressions.
