That wouldn't explain Labour sitting on the suspension decision for months.

If she had been found guilty of an offence related to her council house dealings, she would have stepped down and wouldn't have been in a position where she could open her big mouth and put Labour in the brink of open civil war (according the horribly partisan Tory rag The Independent):
Every cloud and all that... 😁

It was Peston who reported that an anonymous source had told him she was barred from standing. Starmer has denied that she was barred but not confirmed that she can stand. Just more dithering.
If you spend months explaining you have an independent disciplinary system that you can't interfere with, you do pretty much have to abide by the results even when they are slightly inconvenient. The Labour party is always going to have a handful on the harder left just like the Conservatives will always have a few who would join Reform if they weren't such a joke.

Supposed strong leader Starmer getting pushed around by Diane Abbott and Angela Rayner 😄

Was there anything credible other than Abbott herself saying so (by definition not credible) that she was ever being prevented from standing? It feels to me that she was trying to make herself a martyr.

You should put yourself in her shoes for a minute...
She seem just the sort of candidate that Labour needs 😄

It seems like a weird technicality in that it is not Starmer’s decision alone, who can stand in what constituency. Rayner wasn’t aware of a reason that Abbott couldn’t stand and said so. Starmer to my knowledge hasn’t said she couldn’t stand as he can’t make that decision anyway. Abbott had been told by someone(?) that she was banned.
The process is running its course and the candidates will be finalised next week. The way I understand this mess is that although Abbott is ‘free to go forward’ as she is no longer suspended, she may not get the candidacy. Unlikely tho’ as she had a massive majority.

Can we all agree limiting your life time pension allowance on the basis of how virtuous you job was, is fucking stupid?

No disagreement here!

Yep. Although the words 'on the basis of how virtuous your job was' is superfluous.

If we move on from the Pincer movement that is going to collapse the Tories for a moment, Starmer's campaign is so defensive he's basically boxed himself into not being able to do anything.
So hard on immigration, no major income tax rises, no changes to state pensions.
What are they actually going to be able to do?

Since when has what you say in an election campaign been what you actually do once in power?

That's pretty much the point I are recently. Either they're lying about what they're going to tax us or lying about what they're going to be able to do. Assuming that they are applying the normal Labour approach of chucking money at problems.

I think we're all well used to a government saying one thing and doing another. If they were to just stick to Conservative tax plans they would be going up.

And you think that events like the pandemic and the war in Ukraine have nothing to do with that?
If you think it's a bad thing, who will you vote for to fix it?

Last I checked the war is still going strong and we still have tens of thousands off sick, so no, ain't no tax cuts a-comin'.

To (only just) justify the NI cut, Hunt had to put in place plans to cut things like the Environment Agency and courts funding by 13%.

I mean, it sounds about as plausible as funding triple lock plus from "clamping down on tax avoidance".

Every party says that about tax avoidance in the run up to an election. And to be fair, the gap in % terms has dropped over time. Because regardless of what people say, they actually do a fair bit of closing loopholes etc. If they want to do more they need to refocus on where most avoidance is now taking place - which is the small business sector.

They do indeed and you don't need to convince me that HMRC are already on it.

One to cheer up the Tories at this difficult time. Vaughan Gethin has lost the vote of no confidence in the Senydd. He has however taken a leaf out of the Westminster Government book and said he won’t resign. Not sure he can stay in charge after this vote so early in his time as First Minister to be honest. Not sure why he dug his heels in when the story first broke and should have returned the donation. Goes to show arrogance is a flaw amongst politicians of all persuasions.

The Telegraph has a new opinion writer.

If they are going to intervene in the market, pumping money in to ensure prices continue to rise sounds like as bad an idea as it was before.

-
Indeed, it is making that bad idea permanent.

Really pisses me off.
The only thing holding me back from voting Lib Dem at the moment is that their candidate's leaflet is basically bragging how many developments and water treatment facilities he's helped block.
So I was hoping to lend my vote to labour on a "go build" mandate - and then they go and do this moronic stuff.

What did you expect from Labour?
