128, felt good still, think I had just zoned out but had ridden everyone else home then was going past my own house so was like good time to stop.

Felt bad after plenty of 70 milers guess it just depends on the day and how it all panned out.

Guess with this thread you will see some incredible distances but most of them will be personal battles and not something to gauge against

  • 195 miles, 19 Sep 12. Valley on Angelsey to St Athan right down through the middle of Wales. Highlights were numerous. A55 to the bridge at 0300 was a great start, we couldn't resist chain ganging behind one of the wagons on a beautiful night with absolutely nil traffic and a tail wind on a great surface. The climbs and descents through Snowdonia were excellent, empty roads and dawn breaking as we stopped for a brew and a flap jack at top of Pen-y-pas. Mid Wales was bloody miserable, not sure if there is a flat road between Dolgellau and Brecon. A470 from Storey Arms to Pontpridd was lovely, even if the pub I had to stop in after a sugar overload "shart" was the most upsetting place I've ever had to defacate ( and I've done tours of Iraq & Afghanistan, luckily one of the support lads appeared in my moment of panic with some baby wipes). The climb out of Pontypridd was emotional and I won the sprint at the end. A punishing day on the bike but we broke the Dragon's Back!

John, did you ride along the Danube heading towards Vac or the opposite way to Lake Balaton? If so no mozzies when I went in May this year, but beautiful ride, we could have just ridden for ever on those paths.

I went up towards Vac, but on the other side of the river... Szentendre, Visegrad, Esztergom, before crossing the border and going on to Komarno and Dunajska Streda in Slovakia.

The Danube doesn't go to Balaton, which is a pity because that would be an awesome ride to a great destination.

Sorry John, I meant the cycle path not the Danube.

We rode up to Vac on one of the days and returned back via the cycle path, absolutely amazing path and Vac was a really beautiful Town.

We missed the Sportive that cycled around Lake Balaton but due to time took the train there and back and only cycled half way round and took the ferry across, amazing lake and views.

139 miles, Dragon Ride '12. Felt fine at the end, my knee's never been the same since

Getting an early start, catching a few pelatons makes all the difference on a long long ride.

Oooh must swap notes, planning something similar this summer (though I may take two days over it). Did you follow Lon Las Cymru?

Surely anything from Stevo given that the majority of his miles are being driven up and around the mountain, before he rolls straight back down

  • Furthest I've ever done was the midsummer club run that came in at 164 miles (263.8km) and 2436m of climb thrown in. I was glad we had a support van to keep taking food from- it would be very difficult for me to do that distance without.

I have no idea how Tommy Goodwin managed his mileage back in 1939- he must have been superhuman.
Also worth a mention is Billie Flemming who recently passed away and holds the Women's record at 29603.7 miles completed in 1938 with an average of 81miles per day, which is still a phenomenal achievement.

You should do the off road one next year, nearer to 80 miles and on dirt. Best not try it on the panzer though.

Got the option of doing that next year ... it's tempting ... but timing isn't great.

I really am a wuss. About 80 is my longest in a day but I did used to commute 36 miles most days until I moved house. The plans are still there to get a proper road bike rather than the hybrid I currently have, as soon as I have my business running at a relatively decent profit. I tell a lie, it's is likely to be a cyclocross so that it will still do gravel and woods with my kids.

    This Audaxer is pretty impressed!

It's all good to see plenty of people doing some really big distances - I want more people understanding the joy of long-distance riding. If some of them go on to ride Audax, then that is even better! Certainly, once you're up to 250 miles in 24 hours, you're set up to take on anything in the Audax world really (albeit you might need to do that 200-250 miles for 3-4 days on the trot!).

Anything much more than 300 is where stuff gets weird! I'd never ridden much more than 275-300 miles in a day before this year (I'd ridden a 600km (375 miles) Audax straight through in 32-33 hours before) - but doing the 24 and even my modest 375 miles is up there as one of my finer moments - really, really hard though. I can't say I'd recommend it readily! What it must be like for the 500 mile guys I dread to think.

At the end of the day, going further is a lot easier than going faster. Just needs a load of mental fortitude and the rest works itself out.

The down hill ones are quite fast :) Which reminds me, you need to come along to the next uplift we do and see if you can keep up with the fat boys

If you can ride 80 miles, you can ride 100. Pace yourself, make sure you're comfy on the bike and work out what food and drink works for you.

The danger is once you can ride 100 miles, well - you can certainly ride 200km (125 miles). Once you can ride 200km, you can ride 300km; once you can ride 300km, you can ride 400km. It becomes an addiction!

True. It's a mental thing and having the right kit. And to be honest also having a bike where you can vary your grip a little more.

I've never been there. Did you see the mummies? If you're ever in that part of the world again, Visegrad and Esztergom on the other side of the river are really worth a visit.

I assume you mean the ferry to Tihany? I think that Balaton is the world's largest shallow-water lake, which means that it heats up nicely for swimming in summer then freezes over for ice skating in winter (although the reliable annual freeze doesn't happen every year these days). One of my life ambitions is to ice skate the whole perimeter in one day.

103 miles, but there was only 3,500ft of climbing and it was relatively easy @ 17mph tbh compared to the 60-70 mile Peak District rides I do more often.

I'm planning to do the Peaks Epic medium course and then in reverse on the same day next summer. Not massive distance at 126 miles but there will be around 15,000ft of climbing and that's where the difficulty is.

  • I've ridden 258 miles twice, once on the London Edinburgh London Audax last year and once on the first day of a 600km Audax this September, both were relatively flat and both were about 19 hour days.

    150 miles solo this summer.
Got home after 130 odd miles which was around my previous longest and decided to get 150 ticked off.
So had a coffee, put some lights on and some clear glasses and away I went.

    Blimey. Some mammoth rides here.

My biggest was 140 miles when I was 16. For some reason not done that distance again ?

If you like long distance - go on iPlayer and look up The Adventure Show. 1300km to ride in 100 hours. In Scotland. Excellent program.
