Paul 2718, if it is the same as 2013, don't get too excited about all of the roundabouts. I was really looking forward to going the wrong way round Tibbets Corner, but the "wrong side" was closed off...and be careful with the gels near the end. I saw 2 guys trying to be so pro in grabbing gels at speed they lost control and ended up making inelegant and painful dismounts...
I don't know Tibbets Corner from Gibbet Point, but my Strava from 2013 does show clear evidence of enjoying the right line at roundabouts turning from the A3050 to the A317 and turning into Parvis road from the B374. And of course straight lining the Embankment, probably loads of others too. So I'm expecting a little bit of that unusual buzz you get from owning the road.

I didnt see anyone manage to grab a gel without then dropping it, so if you feel you are really needing it for the final few miles then probably better to stop.
Whilst we are on the sticky subject of gels, as I have found the whole process of opening the gel package, getting the gel out and returning the sticky packaging to the back pocket a faff. Last year I invested in two gel bottles and I have since experimented in making my own gels.

Gel bottles are not perfect, but after using these, I will never go back to the standard gel again! Lot less faff and one bottle will contain far more than you will need for the whole event!

Seeking some info from experienced Ride Londoners…

I’m riding it for the first time this year and I’m planning to get the train home (North) afterwards. Are the trains out of London in the hours after the event likely to be a bit of a nightmare with a bike?

    cheers

As a first time RL100 rider can anyone help me plan what gels / bars I need to carry with me. I know what I should be taking on-board per hour in terms of grams of carb and what each item I plan to carry contains. What I am after is information about what the feed-stations are like. Do they provide gels and bars, just halves of bananas or proper food or what? Also is there energy drink provided at the drinks stops or just water, and if so what brand is being provided?

At the Tour of Cambridge Gran Fondo recently it was quite inconsistent with what was at each station, and one sportive a friend rode recently you had to pay for all of the food.

Whilst I like to be prepared and as self sufficient as possible I don't want to be like a hunchback carrying my bodyweight in food!

Feed zones last year were very well stocked, anything and everything was there to be had when I went through, although as with all these events, if you are in a later wave/slower then you might have issues so definitely worth carrying what you'll need.

I have put myself down for 6 hours so guess I will fit into this category. How bad are the queues likely to be to get provisions and more importantly, water refills? I don't want to lose too much time here, and I do have the capacity to carry 4 water bottles but does this mean I am adding too much weight to the bike? I am torn as to what to do as I will certainly get through 4 bottles of fluid during the ride.

Also, are there likely to be queues for toilets? I know they do not encourage going in a bush but again o do t want to lose time queueing to go to the loo either.

Quite honestly, you might be overthinking this. Take two bottles. The feed stations are well stocked, water supplies are more than ample - I didn't see any queues at all for water. Take your time, enjoy the ride, you are going to have a great time.

I'd recommend that anyone take enough food to last the 100 miles as food is light and easy to carry - if you take a stop and there is something you want to eat there, great - by that point you should have eaten some the food you brought with you and so created room in your pockets!

As know one has mentioned it I am guessing the start times still have not been emailed, even though it is July tomorrow and they promised them by the end of June?

I've seen no sign of start times yet. I'm still not sure whether I want to start early enough to get a chance to get into some decent paced groups, or late enough that I'll have a chance of getting the first train in.

Good stuff, fingers crossed for the 6am slot!

Me too - I got something like 6:34 in 2013 (place through Wiggle, not lucky enough to get 2 ballot places), similar would be good. I don't want to be right at the front as it will be tough getting passed, but 8:00 would be a bit rubbish for me.

    I did 5:21 in 2013 and put myself down for 5:10 - 5:20 I think ( could have been 5:00 - 5:15 - I can't remember exactly how the predictions were split up)

Where did you get your via email ?

Got email about an hour ago. I've booked the QEOP bike return service - hope they are flexible on time if I'm running late!

Ok so with a surname beginning in V I'm guessing I will be one of the last to get my email as I still dont have one yet ?

This being my first year doing this I am still trying to work out the logistics of either getting there from where I am in hampshire in the morning on the day or staying over, obviously most places are already booked but I keep seeing people talking about staying at the excel? I wondered what that was all about ? Any ideas are welcome, tia

    Mine is a 6am start!
  • I'm a P and not heard yet. A mate who is a T has heard and is 6:39. I think we put down more or less same finish time, so sounds like from the above and this that the e-mail send time is nothing to do with surname or starting order. Simply I'm hoping for anything that starts with a 6.

They must be doing colours and then running through them. I am in Green A but am starting at 07:12. Bit miffed as I did a 5:03 time in 2013 and out down for a 4:40 this year... oh well drafting opportunities :)

Well this is annoying. I did 4.24 a couple of years ago and am in the same wave. This could mean a lot slower time.

Yep, I'm Green A, and also put down 6hr15 so we'll probably be going around the same pace

    6:03 for me Wave A.

That'll do. I'll be sick by Hampton.

That'll do. I'll be sick by Hampton.

I know a few people who put down the same as me (4.10-4.19) and they've all been given times between 6am and 6.12. I called RL100 and they told me that the waves were not chronological and assured me that 7.12 was a wave for that predicted time. If there is a peloton of people heading out at that pace after 25 waves, the possibility for crashes worries me given the number of cyclists on the road by then (thousands) since it only takes the odd slower, stray cyclist.
