Well seeing as there is no thread on today's race:

Startlist:

More up to date startlist:

One thig that struck me as odd was that there were so many foreign teams from the Continental ranks, something not permitted for a 1.HC event - the UCI rulebook states that you can only invite Continental teams from the host country for a Europe Tour event.
I emailed the organisers and the response was that they have been given special dispensation by the UCI (because of a congested calendar) to flesh out the startlist with Continental teams. The fact that only 12 WT and PC teams wanted to enter must be a bit of a worry but the race would be far better off IMO ran when teams are interested in virtually pan-flat sprint events. August is clearly not a winning spot - clashing with the end of Tour of Poland, Tour de l'Ain, Volta a Portugal, Tour of Utah and Tour of Denmark as well as the start of Eneco... a recipe for no interest perhaps.
In terms of the race itself, predicted to be wet and windy throughout the day though whether or not that's enough to prevent the bunch sprint I'd doubt.

Agree on the bunch sprint. They've cut the sportive by 14 miles, avoiding Leith Hill and Box Hill due to the poor weather - not sure whether they'll do the same for the pro race. If they do, can't see beyond a bunch sprint as there'll be very little terrain to sort the field out.0

Bertha could spice this up a bit0

About the only thing that could spice it up. It's like a stage of the Eneco tour when they run out of ideas.0 -
FJS wrote:. It is what it is. A sprinters one dayer. And looking at the startlist, one taken seriously by very few of the top level sprinters.
Which comes back to its place in the calendar. Very few top level sprinters are in peak condition in mid August and with other events taking greater priority this one's a dead duck ongoing unless they can find a more relevant spot - which IMO needs to be closer to the autumn one dayers or in amongst the semi-classics in spring.0 -
Jack Wilson who used to ride for my club now pro with An Post Chain Reaction and been out with us a few times in the last few weeks is riding in this today. Makes it a bit more of an interesting watch for me.0

Eurosport player? They're showing it on British Eurosport, I guess they'll have it on the European Eurosport channels too. I'm sure a feed will come up as it starts to be televised (2pm).0 -
I found a dodgy site that shows tv and sport channels just have to put up with the crappy adverts every 10 mins that cover the screen.

Oh yes I know that (although a UK proxy and there's no ads...) I just wanted to post the actual link in case any of the UK folk were looking for it... You could also watch it on the BBC 1 on iPlayer, but that wouldn't be in HD...Jibbering Sports Stuff: http://jibbering.com/sports/0 -

Box Slope being taken out made me smile as far as the sportive riders not getting to go up it.
If that hill and slope are taken out then it won't make a difference to the pro race.0 -
What are the climbs like to ride?0

Anybody else at least mildly offended by the misuse of the word "classic" in this absolute chipper?0

Well, how about the "Strade Bianche" sold as if it was a historic race in the cradle of cycling... when it's less than 10 years old and no race worth of mention has ever taken place in the area?left the forum March 20230 -
It seems if it's a one day race then it must be a 'classic'.0

Well Matt Stephens just called the race a 'pretty chipper'... :P0

No. But the word 'chipper' itself is crap.0 -
who gives a shiit what it is called?0
-
A race that uses 'classic' in its name almost certainly isn't one. Loads of them, eg Vattenfalls0
-
Didn't know Brian Smith managed König.0
-
Amy Williams interviewed after the sportive saying she was looking forward to riding Box Hill as she'd heard how hard it was but that she rides round Bath where there's hills and she wanted to see how it compared.
She would have been disappointed!0 -
