Yes, but the full bit is
"(ii) when it is necessary or desirable either to indicate to persons using the road the urgency of the purpose for which the vehicle is being used, or to warn persons of the presence of the vehicle or a hazard on the road. "

While the rider might think they're in a rush, they probably can't claim their journey is so urgent they need the blue lights. And I'm not sure warning someone of their presence is a good excuse either if they're not behaving differently to the rest of traffic.

I passed a cyclist a year or two back who had a red light on his front and white behind. Pointed it out to him and he said it was "To keep people on their toes". I wouldn't be surprised if he's won the Darwin award by now.

They are behaving differently. They're going a hell of a lot slower. Many motorists view that as a hazard.

But, I'd not justify it using that rule. Instead I'd repeat that I'm of the view that it's not attached to the vehicle. The use of the word "on" would be given its normal, literal meaning.

I do accept Vermin's argument about the rider being attached to the bike as being a potentially valid one. This has been an ongoing question, particularly in relation to motorbikes, for some time. It hasn't been legally determined as far as I'm aware.

Perception is interesting. You couldn't honestly think that a blue fibre flare was any form of emergency vehicle. But the contrast of red and blue makes you stand out from the sea of red.

If you're going a hell of a lot slower, you know what you need to do

My argument isn't that the rider is attached to the bike, as I don't think that's a requirement for section 27. That construction would have the light fall within Section 11(2), but I think that's a longer shot than Section 27.

Section 27 relates to a "vehicle on which any lamp ... is used ... so as to be lit except ...". There can be little doubt that a lit lamp, attached to a cyclist's bag, fits into this category, because the lamp is simply being used on (not attached to) a vehicle.

I don't agree that a Court would interpret on in that "light."

    Besides:

“Warning beacon” A lamp that is capable of emitting a flashing or rotating beam of light throughout 360° in the horizontal plane.

Good point. Not sure how that excludes the dangly, flare-type lights that Pro-viz sell (assuming they flash), but it probably excludes the backpack lights. I suppose the primary concern is showing blue lights on the front, as the source would be more difficult for other road users to identify in a split second than lights shown on the rear.

Thanks Dr, I was assuming the link was a specific light rather than general cree dx lighting... I have one from ebay that's awsome so far, but I know super tries a few so wondered what his recommendation was...

    cheers anyway.

Need something to work alongside a Hope District rear this winter.
On/Off super easy, USB recharge, easily mounted in lots of places and v.water resistant.

Can anything top the Exposure TraceR?
I've got the front and its been fantastic.

I've always been interested in the dinotte range of lights, but never pulled the trigger when it came buying them
I've had a couple of their rear lights. Latest one is USB chargeable and self contained and gob smackingly bright. Actually less bright than their older bullet lights, but they were trail lights with red lenses, so a bit silly. The latest ones would still make passable car fog lights.

We turned all the house lights off here last night and sat out in the vineyard drinking wine (eating cheese) whilst looking up at the blanket of stars.

Just amazing how bright the night sky really is.

Yes - light pollution (possibly caused by Chinese 72GW clone bike lights) is a terrible thing. I'm glad that street lights are becoming more "intelligent" and LEDification (I think that's the term my Lighting colleagues use) is beginning to happen.

When my brother farmed in the Loire Valley, we used to sit out at night looking up at the amazing night skies - satellites whizzing over and numerous shooting stars.

Thoughts on a light for flashing duty in addition to my Hope Vision 1 main beam and Cateye Uno helmet mounted light?

My 'flasher' fails regularly and I would like something that attaches without the need for a permanent mount on the bike. I am thinking Knog Blinder 4 or Lezyne Zecto Drive at present. Any ideas which might be best and if there are any others I should be considering?
  • I use one of these - usb charge, easy to get on and off and bright with a wide viewing angle.

Not arrived home in daylight for a couple of weeks now. Still relearning my recharging routine. The super moon was unfortunately not quite super enough to dispense with lights, but still impressive.

Well my yahoo weather app got that one wrong it was still light enough when I got home at 19:55

This morning sadly the awesome big moon wasn't the same but the sunrise through the fog was something else, tomorrow I'm taking pics for sure.

No doubt it'll be thick cloud and rain.

I have a Flare, want a TraceR. Also have a Red Eye which is brighter than the Flare, even if it has just been charged.
I'd offer to sell you the Flare and batteries, but I'd be doing you a disservice.

It srikes me as slightly ironic, although perhaps only by Alanis's definition, that I can't find my flare. It seems to have gone missing in the house move. If you really want to raise funds, I could be pursuaded.

What do you use the red eye with Veronese?

I am thinking of a new helmet lamp and will only buy exposure wo what is compatible with the red eye?

I use a joystick on my helmet with a red-eye. I wouldn't want anything heavier up there.

I have a Red Eye Long that is plugged into a Strada fitted to the bars. I stick a Joystick on my head, well helmet, I should stick a Red Eye Micro on the back of that. The Joystick will also drive the Red Eye if necessary. I just looked at the Evans sight and they have a few shop soiled Exposure lights with bits missing or light* damage, not a problem if you have other Exposure lights.
Vermin, I'll have a think. Would you need the plug in bit of the charger or just the bit that holds the batteries? I'd quite like to keep a spare charger.

    * sorry
