Cheng was delayed today because after pulling the peloton, he accepted the challenge of pulling an elephant.

What is the fascination with Cheng? I really don't get it, unless it's supporting the underdog?

It's not really that he is the underdog, but more that for the first week he seemed to be constantly on the front of the peloton, blowing himself out every day. And he's been struggling through in last place ever since.

The unwelcoming welcome to the team, from Kittel and Degenkolb, lit the fuse.

I think Kenny van Hummel was my favourite Lantern Rouge bearer though. When was it, 2009ish?

Itv highlights particularly ridiculous. Boardman sitting on a sofa in a white coat holding a skull. WTF.

But it was a decent spot. Well put together. The Boardman/Boulting dynamic for these pieces has long been based on Dr. Honeydew/Beaker relationship from the Muppets.

Haha, definitely true. It was quite interesting. But a bit of a WTF moment when they first came on...

    PANIC OVER

    164. CHNJI Cheng 107 TEAM GIANT-SHIMANO 04h 56' 22'' + 12' 41''

From Tour website. Better be correct!

Praise be to the flying spaghetti monster!

The ditch is set to become the new reservoir for Bergerac and the burgemeester of Bergerac thanks Cheng Ji for saving the city millions of Euros. In Cheng's honour they will erect a gold statue of one of his legs in the town square.

Is there enough gold in the world for this?!

The guy is a tactical genius. He obviously foresaw that there would be a crash in the final 3k so the only way he could lose time and secure the lantern rouge was to ditch it. Quite literally.

    What a pro.

We all thought that but it turns out it was Roy Curvers. From the Giant-Shimano Twitter feed:

    "Roy Curvers ‏@RoyCurvers 9h
From all the unlucky guys who crashed today i was the luckiest! Went like a grasshopper in the ditch! #rain #chaos #KeepChallenging #TDF2014"

Seems like Cheng lost 5 minutes as he was off the back, not in a ditch.....

    GO CHENG!!!!

    Respect to this guy:

Gianni Mura, a 68-year-old Italian journalist, poses with his typewriter after an interview with Reuters during the 124.5km seventeenth stage of the Tour de France cycle race between Saint-Gaudens and Saint-Lary Pla d'Adet. Mura, who covered his first Tour de France in 1967 for La Gazzetta dello Sport, is the iconic figure in the race press room. The Italian, who now works for La Repubblicca, has seen Raymond Poulidor in his bath and drunk beers with Felice Gimondi. Almost 50 years after following his first Tour, Mura has not changed a bit. He still dictates his stories to the newspaper after having typed them, usually just outside the press room, fag hanging from his lower lip.
