I suspect he may well have been sandbagging a little bit, and I also wonder if he'd learnt a little bit from underestimating Chris Horner in the Vuelta - coming to the big race fully rested, pulling out time earlier than expected so that everyone else has to worry and chase, not having any previous (recent) form to really put your rivals on notice - all sounds familiar...
