Every (fairly normal) person I know thinks I'm a fool for spending a grand on a bike. I'm having no more fun than on the £200 quid bike I had when I stared riding 25 years ago, but to me the bike is still worth it. There's the difference, value is objective and the fact is mtbs are not good value, but worth is subjective which is why rustyh is happy to have spent the money on his orange and why I'm happy with just having spent 40 quid on a hope chain ring which objectively was not necessary.
I'd actually go so far to say thinking about value for a luxury leisure item is utterly irrelevant in standard economic terms.
Well said. It never ceases to amaze me how much people worry about money they don't have to spend and lives they don't have to lead i.e. other people's.0 -
Well put, not like there isn't any other option of mtb makes to select!0

^This. The Orange Haters remind me of those Android users who have a burning and irresistible need to tell the iPhone users what a terrible mistake they've made. All the gear, no idea and loving the smell of jealousy in the morning.

Exactly, that's my point...Opinions are great, but they are only that. I get your opinion and everyone else's, just mine is different. I don't take it personally, I actually agree with some of the points made around spec. Compare bike for bike and its impossible to argue, look at my bike spec now vs new and its easy to see i agree with that. My point was around what I see as value vs. what you and others see is very much different. Value is a term that is broader than just the price.....
But as for crying and insulting you??? Where?? I don't get it? How is what i have written in anyway insulting? Or demonstrating that i am in fact crying? To coin your own phrase 'its a forum' people debate differing opinions, i'm sorry if you feel that not agreeing with you suggest i am upset. Frankly I'm not, i'm a big grown up boy with a family, important job, mortgage and a pretty sweet life. I wont cry over something you or anyone else says whilst hiding behind their keyboard about my bike....0 -

More aimed at the guy calling people bitches, had no sleep last night so read it as one post apologies.
But i think your argument basically states its pointless having an opinion on a forum therefore dont post ever :P
And feel free to ride over my way, while im limping my fat ass round the trail i will insult your bike at great length :P0 -
In all seriousness that's one of the things i love about the sport, when you turn up and mates and randomers on the trail take the piss out of each others kit. I don't mind the filing cabinet jokes, 5 bar gate etc. Same as i take the piss out of friends on Canyons for being cheap skates, or spesh, giant or trek riders for having no imagination...Its all about the banter and actually what its all about. I don't like the term Bitches. I prefer haters, its amazing how people become brand loyal and protective over a couple of grands worth of metal and plastic isnt it!!!
I wasn't trying to suggest that you shouldn't post an opinion 95% of all forum traffic is opinion, its what makes these little ding dongs entertaining. I was trying to make a point that all opinions are only worth something to the poster no one else, sure they make for debate and i apologise if i was a little abrupt.0 -

I quite often make sure i have a nice pear at least once a day, occasionally i wedge a nice ripe banana in between a juicy pear. I have even been known to enjoy the intricacies of a nice smooth peach!0

Perfectly put.
If someone is happy spending their money on something, then that is good value. I think this is what he's trying to say, but he's also trying to say that 'value' has some definitive measure. It doesn't. Value is entirely subjective.0 -
