Can we all just take a moment to acknowledge Cheng's breakaway killing forebearer, and a former World Time Trial nonetheless, Bert Grabsch

    From the Giant Shimano website:
“Behind the race out front the guys had to work hard at the back of the race too. Marcel, Cheng and Tom V moved to the grupetto on the first climb of the day meaning that they had to work all day to make sure they made the time cut. It wasn’t an easy stage by any means for them but they managed to finish with around five minutes to spare." (my bold)

If Marcel has the train then Cheng is what pulls it. Cheng puts the eng in engine.......

More details have emerged surrounding Cheng's inclusion in the squad. Apparently, Cheng was at home in Beijing when he got the call up. There wasn't enough time for him to catch a flight to Yorkshire for the Grand Depart so he cycled over as it was faster.

The central Chinese city of Chengdu was named in honour of the epic all-nighter he MC'd before a dawn rendezvous with Tibet and the high mountain passes. It was the acute episode of bad gas he suffered traversing the Himalaya that gave rise to the appellation 'Whispering Rims'.

Cheng will most likely spend today, as yesterday, towing the Giant sprint missile over the saw-toothed profile of the Vosges. I suspect he will not feature much on our screens, but he will be in our hearts as we wish him safe passage through the mountains and into the rest day.
The Giant-Shimano Team website features the following words...

"It’s not just about winning. It's about advancing the sport of cycling. Join us with #KeepChallenging"

And though Cheng Ji will not win today he will, in his own way, advance this beautiful sport of ours.

Cheng puts all the C-h-e-n-g in "Challenging".....

THe bike stared out as a 63cm frame, its just Cheng's power has whittled down during a day to a 53cm, I reckon there is a small mobile fab shop following Giant Shimano just to make components as his awesomeness wears them out daily.

In case you were not aware it's Cheng Ji's birthday today:
    From the Giant-Shimano Twitter feed:
"Join us with an RT in wishing 'The Breakaway Killer' a.k.a @jicheng369 a very happy birthday, and a good rest day at the #TDF!"

If you are on Twitter please consider sending him a message of support.

Big interview with "The Breakaway Killer" on Avondetappe, last night.
Turns out he not only takes orders, but cooks the Chinese takeaway for the rest of the lads.
His speciality dish being chickens wings cooked in, wait for it.........................

    ..................................... coca cola.

I missed that Avondetappe, must catch up. Coca-Cola eh? Nigella would be so proud.

Anyway I'm beginning to think that Kittel and Degenkolb's pre-Tour comments concerning Cheng are the best thing that could have happened to him. How many of us would really have paid attention to him if he hadn't been highlighted by their comments?

Beast from the East, Orient Express, or just plain Cheng Ji. Whatever you call him he's back where he belongs - on the front, nose in the wind, killing the breakaway....

Cheng wasn't in the last group today. He was keeping Degenkolb company and they finished nearly two minutes ahead of Kittel and four other Giants.

I missed todays stage. Was Nibali struggling to keep up with Chen? Did Chen win the stage or did Nibali just beat him across the line at the end?
