Stunning performance from a guy called-up with only few days notice. Hope he recovers for the Tour. Tinkoff building a formidable unit.

I think you are in a very small minority then. Fans running alongside riders is pointless, idiotic and selfish.

I don't think a fan running alongside a rider has ever knocked one off. I have seen riders knocked off by people taking photo's and in this Giro giving a rider a push from behind but not by running along.

They don't have to knock them off. The last thing you need in when knackered and under pressure is the added pressure that they might knock you off or even just slow you momentarily. What does it achieve? All they are is a bunch of egotists trying to get themselves noticed, it's the same with the fancy dress. We need a few Hinault style riders in the peloton to sort them out or fans who will clothesline them from the side.

I wouldn’t say they were drunk, drunkenness doesn’t seem a problem amongst spectators (away from the Dutch corners  )
To be fair to the Basques and the Dutch, they might get drunk but they for the most part actually know how to behave.
So rather than more barriers, the solution is clearly more orange clothing!

Oh well, in that case it's obviously completely safe and we can all be sure it will never ever happen

I have been looking for that footage from last years TdF where the ginger bearded bloke gets tripped over and then hangbags up to the guy who did it - who then wallops him. It was discussed on here alot - its great viewing if anyone has the link...

Are you a health and safety nut? "It will never ever happen" Lets just chuck away the excitement of the mountains and the fans who play a huge role in creating that excitement just in case and it hasn't happened yet some fan knocks a rider off while running along side. Remember this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEqQW1-casM Armstrong getting knocked off by a static fan. Then getting a helping push [ does not fall off] and then the fans stepping back when he comes out of his pedals [ the barstards ] and then we have fans cheering running alongside, parting the road to let the riders through. You want to stop all this because a guy accidently and only trying to help pushed a rider a bit to hard.
Its awesome. You want this kind of excitement stopped. Shall we also clear the grassy knolls as well. It might happen.

Nothing to do with safety most of us just don't want some exhibitionist getting in the way of the racing.

My point was simply that although no riders have been knocked off by fans running alongside them yet doesn't mean they won't be in the future. There have been lots of cases of fans getting in the way in other situations, so it's just a matter of time. And not just on mountains, look at what happened to Stybar in PR last year. I'm all for fans creating excitement, but they can do that perfectly well by standing off the side of the road and cheering, can't they? Or if they really want to run up the road, they should have the sense not to do it literally right next to the riders. When the actions of fans start influencing the results of races you have to think they need to take it down a notch.

It's the fancy costumes, and the recording video on your phone as you run alongside. It's becoming more about themselves than the riders. You don't want to see the passion go away, but equally you don't want riders to lose races because of it.

Cant you guys find something else to talk about. Maybe congratulating Quintana? There doesnt seem to be much congratulating on this forum.

I will leave you with this from Robert Millar:
Bardiani's Francesco Bongiorno had been shadowing the Australian until 3km to go but then some nut case, dressed in a rainbow top no less, decided to help the Italian and promptly pushed him off. I despair of these idiots who think it's fun to get involved in the bike race by running alongside, in costumes or in some case with very little to hide their dignity. And it wasn't like this self elected world champion learned anything about his dumb involvement because four minutes later he was running in the road again. No wonder Rogers thumped a few of the over enthusiastic idiots as riding up a goat track is hard enough without having to deal with blokes in tutus screaming in your ear.

It's almost inevitable that a major incident will happen. The crowds are getting worse, not better. The next step is that the runners will need to take selfies while running. And there's also the rise of a small section of fans that are filled with bile and looking for a release. I expect to see a spectator actually attack a rider at the Tour before the decade is done.

Yes, heaven forbid we talk about important incidents that may have determined the result of the stage this thread is specifically about. What bastards we all are.

I reckon it's not long before a rider is taken out by Ra's Al Ghaul and the league of shadows
On a serious note. Merckx got punched.

The finish line was slightly more subtle in those days! It always surprises me how heavy Merckx looks for someone who climbed so well. Not quite Indurain stature but he still looks a 'normal' size for a cyclist who can get up mountains quickly.

I watched the boxing on Saturday night and I can't say that the atmosphere was spoiled by the lack of a drunk man dressed as a fairy dancing around the ring

There's a time and a place for running alongside the competitors at a sporting event and that time and place is the Pamplona bull run.

The best one is the guy dressed in a biscuit-coloured suit at 7.00 mins. No mankini or tutu for that dude.

I posted that because although there was some annoying people on the Zoncolan, it's been the case for years. The bellend in the world stripes was a bellend, but he was actually the only fan that seemed to affect the racing to any degree. Of course, if one of the tutus had fallen in front of Quintana, then that's a different story...

One of the beauties of the sport for me is the fans being on the spot. I can see why people don't like fans running alongside, and would like to see it stopped, but not by having barriers all the way up the climbs.

I didn't realise Nairo was on the forum, otherwise that would be like writing someone a birthday card who is not going to read it cos you're not going to send it to them, all a bit weird really.

    What's his username?
