The chasing group is 40 seconds behind. Contains people like J Rod and Scarponi. And Quintana I think.

    Caruso looks really, really bad.

Evans owes Movistar so quite right to push on ... Shame for some of the others though ...

How can it take that long to get a medic and an ambulance? Very shabby.

BMC should sit up. Shouldn't take advantage of a situation like that.

Well unfortunately it looks like a crash is going to have a major affect on the GC.

A lot of riders down and out. What is it about these Italian Roads that makes them so insanely slippery?

    2 years in a row now it's been like a Paris-Roubaix GT!

I'm not happy with taking advantage of this crash. Evans with 40s in group of 10 ot so. Last 6km.

Conscious and moving (barely) though so that's a good sign ...

Rodgriguez looks really awkward on the bike. Out the back of the chase.

J Rod looks like he's been down and he is off the back of the chasing group. He's going to lose big time unfortunately.

This, horrible, not moving and no medics... just terrible.

    BMC should be ashamed.

Pirazzi having to be pushed up the hill by Enrico Barbin.

And that's pathetic for Movi. Quintana no help from 4km. They've done nowt all day.

BMC not making any friends there. Poels chasing hard.

Evans has been ambushed before at the end of Giro stages in the past; he's just giving some payback to the Italians.

Matthews with a great chance to keep the Maglia Rosa - the Shroud of Montecassino - albeit stained with the blood of the fallen Caruso.

Sometimes pro cycling amazes me. We spend all day complaining nobody's racing, then when they start racing everyone complains it's the wrong moment!

Disappointed. Boring day and then an attack off a crash has a massive impact on GC.

Credit to Orica for making sure Matthews got into that move though.

Purito is even more screwed now unless he managed to claw his way back off camera. Movistar let Quintana down, which is not exactly a great sign before they even hit the big stuff. Very little organisation from any of the other teams really.

Not really a race though when a load of riders are held up by a crash that leaves one rider in a serious state?

Every single stage BMC work their butts off to keep Evans right up the front out of trouble just in case something like this happens. So I don't see why they should stop riding now because other teams don't.

BUT that's the essence of a RACE surely? Had to be right to press on.

You can see the difference between Evans and Quintana. Evans just put everything in to gaining every second he possibly could, it didn't matter who a lead out for the finish.

When Quintana ran out of domestiques he just sat up and waited for someone else to do something rather than taking responisbility himself.

If riders are supposed to stop every time there is a crash, why do we bother with all these stages - just have one time trial to decide the overall GC.

BMC right to press on. Racing incident. Movistar have done the same in the past - what goes around, comes around.
