Winner!! Thought it might be too easy but hoped it would have taken longer than that.

Is it a thing for pushing down the marble used to seal fizzy drinks bottles in the olden days?

(Although if it is, I'm unable to post any pictures cos I'm at work, and then I'm off to Belgium for a 3 day jolly but with no internet access. So somebody else will have to.... )

Yup, that's what it is. I'm guessing that this one also doubled as a drinking glass, because the ones I've seen before are made of wood. There's an explanation about them here.....

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codd-neck_bottle

And from it I've learnt that they are called Codd-neck bottles, which I didn't know before.

As the guesser is unable to put up a picture, can someone else do it please? First come first served.

I thought of the perfect thing for this over the weekend, so of course I couldn't find it.
  • While we're waiting for a good object, what's this for?

It was in my house when I moved in.

It clamps to the kitchen table/worktop and it is a mount for something like a juice press/mincer?

  • Clamps to a worktop or desk, yes. Doesn't really have a kitchen feel to it though, more like workshop.
One of the smaller bits fits in slots in the clamp. The top cylindrical bits are cup-shaped with very sharp edges.

on the smaller pieces, does the central 'axle looking thingy' rotate? it looks vaguely like an industrial tin opener

Is it for woodworking or metal?

It does look very "industrial kitchen" stylee to me.
Doesn't have the name Hobart on it anywhere does it?
  • The axle looking thingy bits don't rotate.
It doesn't look strong enough for wood or metal working, since any sideways force would twist the clamp.
And it has no markings apart from a number 4 on one piece.

Put it together and take a couple more pics please Bobby. It would be useful to see the clearance between the two cutty type bits.

Do those two metal protrusions hold something whilst it is rotated?

For winding on to a spool or something?

It's worth bearing in mind the scale of the thing, it's not as big as it looks. Judging from the initial pic, I'd say it was only about 4" ( old money) across the back and just a bit bigger along the longer edge, and that makes the uprights quite small too.

It's size just seems at odds with it's industrial looking feel to me, which suggests that it's something that was design for a lot of use.

  • Right, more pics.

Both of the upright pieces are identical but only one can fit into the clamp at a time, so maybe there should be 2 clamps. Or maybe they aren't meant to fit in the clamp at all. The reinforced bolt hole in the clamp can't be used when the upright piece is fitted, and the long slots aren't used.
The apparent tilt of the protrusion is just due to camera angle.

Maybe it's a thing that a homeowner can leave behind when he moves just to fuck with the mind of the new owner.

Oh found the thing I was looking for if we want an object when we're bored of this one.
I presume there are no markings on it Bobby. It doesn't have thingy for a wotsit stamped on the underside.

Why don't you contact the previous owners?

The previous owner died, and his son sold the house. Presumably left this because he didn't know what it was. Or to confuse me.

I only posted this to pass the time until something better came along, so feel free.
