No wooden bits from what i can see, if it was garden/diy related i would expect a wooden bit on the handle, also looks like it may have been once highly polished and lastly my father in law collects things like that and have seen something of a similar nature.

It looks like old stainless steel so medical looks promising . . .dental? Perhaps veterinarian?

What's annoying is I've seen that object before, but can't remember what it is!

Looks like some kind of hand plunge saw or router - the screwy bit on top must open up the jockey wheels at the bottom to increase the length of chain between them, spinning the handle then turns the chain so you can cut a line of that length down into something.

More or less, something to do with amputations. I don't know exactly what it is. So i'll hand it over to you.

Who? The key word was 'medical'. Did you remember what it was for? (just for the runner up prize :D )

  • Looking at it to consider it's functionality it appears very much like a pipe cutter in the hole in the middle - except with the mechanism adapted to save rotating the whole thing around what is being cut to tighten the blades instead doing that from the grip.

That would very much tie in with the suggested use of amputations, especially for long bones where you can hardly wave them around with the same ease as you could a bit of pipe.

Gingaman got it right when he said that it was a hand powered chainsaw, which it is.

It used to be used for cutting skulls

It looks like the bit at the springy end has a bunch of pins on it and the bit at the other end is a trigger for making them move into the clamp looking bit.

Is it some kind of instrument of torture or perhaps a tool for doing multiple sheeps tail piercings at once.
