Is it a trigger? Does it attach to a gun??

  • No. It is not a trigger, nor does it attach to a gun (or any other sort of firearm).

So I'm thinking with just a few mm movement, maybe the base sits on a pipe and the hinged bit is used to just cover/uncover a hole or something - maybe like a key on a flute or some other musical instrument?
  • I think we are close enough to the answer.

It is a thumb rest for a clarinet.

Some sort of tube bender for putting a kink in a bike frame tube?

Or putting that 'ding' that you often have in the chainstay near the large chain ring??

Nothing to do with bikes, but you're not far off in terms of how it's used.

Presumably it is some kind of bend former but I can't think what you could bend with such a weedy thumbscrew - is it for breaking the legs of small, yappy dogs?

    Yes.

No (anyway, surely it would be better to apply it to their necks? a broken leg isn't going to shut them up).

It's for straightening out kinked spanked out monkey's. Arran has been looking for one of these for years.

    Strangely, no.

To give you all a bit of a clue, it's used for bending a particular material, with the result being artistic, rather than functional.

Winner! (except it's bonsai, not banzai)

The object is a Bonsai Bending Jack - used to put bends into branches and trunks that are too thick to be held in place by conventional wiring techniques:

So it's not a tree bender used in tree bending then?

    So close.

I think it's my turn and I have a choice of a staple remover or a book of post-it notes at my desk

Let me scour the internet for something unusual.
