Is it used to protect something else from abrasion / impact?
Or is the black part a protective layer with something inside it?0 -

Deliberatly jettisoned, but not from an aircraft. Not toilet or food waste.~~~~~~Sustrans - Join the Movement~~~~~~0 -
At the risk of not being able to post a picture . . . is it ballast from a hot air balloon (although I thought these were usually bags of sand not bags on sand)Wilier Izoard XP0

Debris from a de-orbiting spacecraft/satellite?
I think that this is close enough, it is a fuel cell from a multistage rocket. Apparrantly the Australian desert is littered with space junk such as this.

I can't find anything really unusual about me, so a little cheat with a close-up.

Amazing object, I didn't want another go (would never have guessed that anyway  ) so I looked it up when it was first posted. I'm surprised that it doesn't make a hole when it comes down, unless it comes in at a really shallow angle. However it impacts, it would really spoil your day if you were in the way when it landed.
The older I get, the better I was.0 -
terminal velocity is relatively low, it might kill you, but it won't make a hole to put you inmy bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny0

You know your wax crayons. Won't they let you have anything sharper? :P

NASA estimates that manmade space debris has been dropping out of orbit at an average rate of about one object per day for the past 50 years, so it's surprising that there has been so few accidents.~~~~~~Sustrans - Join the Movement~~~~~~0 -
chances of hitting a person or populated areas are pretty low...
debris from launches ends up dowrange, which is planned to be over ocean/desert, the highest risk for those on the ground is immediately after launch when it's still over the launch area and loaded with fuel
uncontrolled low earth orbit stuff is going to reenter fast enough to burn up/fragment unless it's a substantial lump, in which case it'll still most likely hit ocean/wilderness
afaik since the start of the space program there's been far more damage and injury caused by meteors/meteorites than manmade bits falling out of orbitmy bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny0 -
