Definitely not a fall arrest system for boats.

As mentioned - something clips onto it. Does a similar job to what gingaman posted. I did the same google search he did and found that picture - which is a gooseneck for a boom. This has a similar job, but is specific and NOT for a boom.

Mot really. It has a fairly specific job. Something attaches into it

    So something attaches into it..................

Sorry, something clips ON to it. Not only does it look like a pen 15 it is also the 'male' end of the attachment.

I did say 'on' in the last 2 replies.

so, you put the object into something, and something else then clips onto the object?

is it to stop the ruddy rudder falling off?

The object is fixed to the boat but can move up and down (in order to trim it). Something clips onto it.

What is the thing which clips onto it and therefore what is it?

I saw this and felt left out after the auto post reply wotsit didn't send me an email. Now I have seen the object in question, I am going back to practising for the marbles world championships... (no offence). Fantastic object that thing in the desert BTW. More of that please.

    Not a vang.

Something attaches to it (temporarily) to hold a certain sail in place, when hoisted.

therefore, it is a temporary jib attacher-er rope doohickey

    Piña is close enough.

    Spinnaker pole attaches to it.

Ha ha. lol. Apart from the mainsail of which there are probably a few, a spinnaker is the only other sail I could name. So I got lucky. You'll have to explain why it is 'temporary'.
I'll off to search for a pic...

Spinnaker is only used when the wind is behind you. It's the massive sail which bellows out the front. The pole attaches to that pen15 shaped thing which helps the sail keep its shape and catch the wind

In that case, Pina, it is most definitely a tool used in the spinning of metal, mainly brass, to produce such things as nose cones for propellers, rockets, lighting reflectors etc

    industrial pizza cutter?

If you have a pizza with radius 'z' and depth 'a' the formula for finding the volume of the pizza is pi.z.z.a 8)
