To be honest with you this thread makes me feel left out. I used to have the option of Dutch or English comms on the Eurosport on my telly, now I only have the choice of Dutch so I am feeling like I'm missing all the fun.

Pretty much the same here. Danish TV2 with Rolf Sørensen FTW. Have heard the occasional CK on trips back to GB, so understand the pain.

    No-one likes a show off.

I have ended up forking out lots of money for a VPN to get most of the races on Dutch speaking channels.

He just happens to have handled his bike so badly that it has cocked up on the back wheel and he is using his other arm to counter balance....

I sometimes think I've got Dutch commentary when listening to Kirby for all the sense it makes.

I cant understand Dutch but as Pross says that's not much different to Kirby half the time anyway.

I could try French, I can follow a bit and I'm trying to get better so it would help. My work laptop has a VPN to Norway but that would be even less comprehensible than Kirby :D

Boys, if it's a choice of Sporza or Kirby, I pick Sporza every time.
Do you think I speak Flemish?
But I still glean so much more info about what's happening on the road, all delivered without the faux hysteria.

Can't you just turn the sound off and kill this thread? It keeps floating to the top of the forum like something that can't be flushed away.

    *engages Carlton-mode*

"Yes, but they say cream rises to the top, so they're going to milk this one for all they're worth. Heh-heh..."

Continue laughing at own joke for next forty minutes, etc etc

"Underlay really laying it on the line with that comment, but there'll be no laying down when they get to the finish today etc etc"

But he'll be hoping that Karpets doesn't go over the top of him in the sprint.

  • Not one for the haters (it does have conversion potential, though I’m afraid he’s unfazed by forum moaners) but I’ve just smashed through his book and thought it was excellent. An informative insight into what goes on behind the Eurosport scenes, genuinely LOL inducing anecdotes, and the Sean and Dan tales are a lot of fun. I’ve read a hell of a lot of cycling books and this was a breath of fresh air.

I think all but his fiercest critics acknowledge that he's probably very entertaining company, just not a good commentator.

I suspect he's the sort of man - and it's always men - who used to be described as "very clubbable".

Still is, come to think of it...

it is very telling that he's the one one who wasnt put in front of the camera at Le Tour. Everyone else was involved in pre or post show, CK was missing and dont think theyve ever used him in front of the camera

I can't remember Rob Hatch being on screen. Mind you, I was at work most of the time.

Isn't that just because he is a commentator rather than a pundit or presenter?

Correct. He's not a pundit because he's not got any expertise - he just calls it how he (thinks he) sees it

He was proud of himself with that one.

  • In his defence, he doesn't have an easy job filling all that air time.

I’d Rather have Carlton Kirby - can you imagine if Rob Hayles was on. Zzzzzzzz about as interesting as watching paint dry
