Pretty sure that's Urs Freuler.
Thanks - never heard of him, but he has a very distinctive look
From his wiki page it looks like he was quite successful in the Giro but not so much in the TDF - probably didn't feature much on the C4 highlights show.“New York has the haircuts, London has the trousers, but Belfast has the reason!0 -

This one posted by TWH on the Nokerre Koerse spoiler thread is excellent, real close quarter action!

The escapee, helpless in the face of a pitiless peloton smeared across the road. Drama.

It's always funny when that happens. However, it is especially funny when you do it in a monument.0

Fair enough! Even Zabel seems to find it funny in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3rX3EBPbWA0 -

Hinault attacked 80km out on the 1980 Giro (Stelvio stage) and joined his teammate J R Bernaudeau. They worked together and JRB won the stage and Hinault the GC. Old school heavyweight.

This is a great thread....

Anyone know the race/story?

PLENTY of things right with this image. The greatest ever Tour for a start, possibly the best ever stage, Lemond turning over Fignon in his home city, the radical helmet (not unlike Sky's Kask TT helmets these days), the TT bars (although Hampsten and 7-11 used them first in the Giro that year) which ushered in a new wave of technological advancements, the sunshine in Paris in July, the Oakley Razorblades 8)
However, even for a non-cycling fan, you can visibly see Lemond's every sinew straining (check out his calves almost popping out) as he launches himself off the start ramp shooting for the win. It's an athlete at his prime, on top of his game.
Even though it's now 25 years ago  the fluo look is still going strong in the peloton.0 -

From what I know...
Looks like the 1976 Paris-Roubaix as covered in 'Sunday in Hell' movie. That pic is both Roger de Vlaeminck and Freddy Maertens.

Looks like Freddy Maertens second in that shot on the Flandria team with the WC stripes, which would mean my guess is a classic during the 1982 season. Or 1977 since he was WC in 1976 and 1981, or am I missing something?0 -
Thanks guys.Contador is the Greatest0
