Apparently there were too many Movistars in there for Astana. There is a breakaway now with 9 riders:
Amets Txurruka (Caja Rural), Juan Antonio Flecha (Vacansoleil-DCM), Dominik Nerz (BMC), Chris Anker Sorensen (Saxo-Tinkoff), Egoi Martinez (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Nico Sijmens (Cofidis), Bartosz Huzarski (NetApp-Endura), Rigoberto Uran (Sky) and Martin Kohler (BMC)

They got a shade over a minute on the peloton, with Movistar at the front.

I thought this would be a breakaway day given the tough stages over the weekend and that it is a (relatively) short stage. Might still get some attacks from the GC guys if it all stays together until the final climb for those bonus secs.

Warren Barguil seems to be very active again at the head of the race, it would be awesome if he won another stage.
  • The front of the peloton is littered with Euskaltels

They are leading the team competition, which is a nice surprise.
  • Imagine if Barguil rode for Team Sky. He would just be a dogs body. Riding for Argos he has backing to do what he wants. Lets hope he does a number here.

On the highlights they were saying basically that, but replacing 'team sky' with 'a french team': at Argos there's much less pressure to be France's next saviour of cycling.
  • Oops, Sean and Carlton giving away lack of accurate knowledge about UCI regs re when riders can be signed...
  • Look at him go. Turned up the gas and broke the breakaway into two. A neo pro showing some seasoned pros how to race.

    Leade at 3mins.

Boys in blue have no reason to press though.

  • I don't think Nibali would be happy to win without a stage win - thought the team might push on for that today otherwise it's stage 20.
  • Barguil so easy he is currently soft pedalling so that the others can keep up.

  • 10ks to race. Euskaltel have the peloton lined out. They need to salvage something. Consistent underperformers regardless of how exciting they can be.

  • Garate jumps and tries to get a gap but Barguil is leading the chase. I hope he just races a little less eagerly and lets the others do some work before he tries to open the gas fully.

  • Here we go. Barguil, number 22, neo-pro, attacks from distance, bouncing up and down and accelerating like a pure climber. 100m gap just like that.

Still 9km to go though. If he is going to do it it will be the hard way!
  • 22secs at 8k to race. Looking smooth for now. Weather is good.

  • Ooooh pain face all over, maybe should have kept that eagerness bottled a little longer.
