Cranks are really pissing me off now... i just got back from the trail and when i get off the bike and have a look one of the chainring bolts are missing!!! I triple checked them when i fitted them just yesterday. The bolt that has fallen off its the one that had the most strain on it, where the bend was. Really disappointed. I payed like £12 for those 4 chainring bolts. Why are the short ones so damn expensive?!? Now looks like i have to get new ones.
If i really wanted to i can do a bit of homemade engineering and try and get the chainring to sit level on the cranks but i am just not bothering anymore...0 -
Swapped crankset and BB. Hussefelts off, ISIS drive BB off, Shimano Alivio crankset on, hard as nuts and still (amazingly) fully functional square taper BB on. I have kept those red wellgos. Fantastic pedals. Never slipped off them once, and they look great. Changed grease to Loctite 8021 for the first time, brilliant grease. (i am very fond of my greases, lol)
All problems and sounds have now disappeared. Not a creak, clank, or a clunk. Nothing. The bike is much much more enjoyable now, and the chainring sits straight on the cranks (im still missing a chainring bolt though ) new ones will be ordered soon.
I shall be going hydraulic front and back very soon hopefully, and i should be getting my final wave of goodies. It will include a red AEST seat clamp, same rotor that i have on the back but in 203mm, an adaptor for that, red anodized bolts for the caliper and mount (amazon fked me over last time, so i re ordered on ebay) some raceface decals, and short chainring bolts in red again. £45 quid for that and im finnito with le Chucker... Then its Arrowheads turn. Turning it into a chrome single speed with red and blue bits and bobs. Lovely!0 -
Any New Updates, I enjoyed reading this thread.0
-
Well ive got a front rotor fitted and thats all ive done since my last post. Ive ordered several bits this morning (some for this and some for my other build). The next update will probably be next week, and it will be finished0
-
Ok Thanks.0
-
A few bits arrived in the post today, i expect this build to be finished tomorrow when my front mount arrives.
I have taken off the mechanical clarks caliper and fitted the Tektro Auriga hydraulic caliper. Braking performance has drastically improved. The bike actually lurches forward now when the brake is applied. The lever feels really really nice, and it is completely silent, wheras the mechanicals made a faint grinding noise. I am massively pleased with it so far, and i havent got the front caliper on yet! Thanks to gjt for both of those, great help.
The bike feels perfect now, no unwanted noise or rattles. Brilliant.
Thanks to Step83 for the free rotor. Visually seems to be better than my other disc, looks alot more meaty. I have the 203 for the front but im going to stick with this one for now as it looks as if it will be better. Red ano bolts on that ofcourse.
I have also taken the old seatclamp post off which will go on the other build. I have replaced it with an AEST red anodized one. I love the look of it. Ill get some nice pictures later on when i go out for a ride on it. (havent been offroad in 3 weeks!)
Im considering some red Raceface decals on the top tube...not too sure though, dont want it to look too tacky!0 -
looks good. only thing id say and its a little of my ocd escaping is get matching rotors although i only run a rear brake on my jump bikeI rode what you dug last summer0
-
My rotors are now matching and ive got the front caliper fitted. But i still have no power for some reason, and it squeals quite loudly. Im not sure why.0
-
deglaze the pads and set the calipers up as per manufacturers specs. i chucked my hope m4s on and they were ok set them up and i think i now have too much brakingI rode what you dug last summer0
-
Coming together well now, looks so much better with decent forks as we'll!Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

All done now, just need new pads. Ordered them today. The back ones are fine but i may aswell change the rear while im at it.
Took the pads off and sanded the front ones down as the brake had no bite. Looks like all the material has worn off on the fronts, in relation to the back ones. The back ones still are black and the front ones have gone completely white (after light sanding)
So this is it finished:
The new rotor, might go back to the previous though once i get new pads as it does look a bit more promising.
The new cockpit:

cracking little bike0

Back on the bike after about a month out with a bent wheel. Had a nasty crash that involved a lamp post and a fence on the way back from a ride.
I decided to take the Maxxis Aspen off the back and put on this bald Maxxis Advantage that i had lying about. (It came on a bike i bought, and it was bald) I appropriately renamed the tyre. I just put it on so i can muck about around the block with it doing skids and stuff. I wont be going offroad too much in the winter.
I had a blast today on a very muddy trail. Rear grip was near enough 0 as you could imagine. It wasnt too bad when i was getting up to speed, but i wheel spinned a huge amount going up some of the trails. I had to walk up a couple because i had no grip to get up Was a very fun day though! I got some photos. The crappy HTC mobile phone type.

Not sure that that's an improvement haha
Seriously though that's really nice mate you've earned it. What travel is it? Aggressive hardtail thread !0 -

Haha sorry i couldnt explain it properly! You can just feel the extra bite from the brakes slowing the bike down alot more. The bike does lurch forward a bit though, as in go through a bit of the fork travel.
Cheers mate. I believe i do not qualify for the aggressive HT thread, 100mm travel. :P0 -
Well Aggreasive is more bike style and riding intent than travel.

Looking good GT........looks like all the work you put into that bike was worth it, it's a great looking bike. Good work0

I might have missed it written here, but how many gears you running on the back? Thinking of going 1x9 on my bike and have been looking at one of those Superstar chain guide thingys 8)Framebuilder

Im running 1 x 8, its really good.
The chainguide is a bit fidly. A few things to bear in mind when you use your superstar guide:
The grub screw can eat away at the part of the chainguide it touches
Its quite easy to round the grub screw itself (mine is still fine but it has slipped a few times)
If it becomes loose mid ride, expect a noisey ride back unless you have allen keys.
It may be obvious, but the easiest way to set up: Change gear so your chain is on the smallest sprocket, then move the guide so its as close to the outside facing part of the chain without touching, and tighten it up there.0 -

According to Superstar you should be alright.
"The XCR ST is an XC chainguide designed to be used on a single front chain ring and with either a 9 or 10 speed cassette at the rear"

Thanks! It wasnt a great deal of work, compared to most other bikes i have built up, but it is definitely worth it. I love the way it looks and rides. You really helped me out with this, cheers!
Ill be putting a rigid fork one pretty soon, i might do it tonight but i might be lazy and leave it for tomorrow.
Im also looking getting cheap "winter" tyres. Ill be riding this around on the road alot more, since ive put the Raleigh up for sale, and im selling the Arrowhead very soon, just have some crank/bottom bracket issues to address on the Arrowhead.
So im going to go for a pair of fairly cheap tyres, and ill put the Maxxis Aspens to one side along with the RST forks, for when the days get longer. Ill probably go for a whip around the trails on the weekends with a few mates when i can.

Oh yeah, nice spot. These are faster though obivously, because they are all red.
The only thing about buying the all red ones is that people will think im trying to show off...when in reality i just like red.
So, i got off my arse and fitted the rigid forks.(thanks to TheRookie!) The only trouble i ran into was the dodgey rotors (again). The highest part of the rotor was clipping the calipers. I took it out for a test ride, and as soon as i heard it i thought "oh, its just got to bed in. Different fork, different mounts, its touching a bit" then about 3 seconds later i realised what it really was and i stopped immediately. Added a washer under each bolt between the mount and caliper, and all is good.
I have created a wheelie machine! This bike was already a bit rear heavy, and now that ive added a bit of a lighter fork the weights gone even further back. I broke my wheelie record on my 2nd try (the whole road 8) ) It is quite quick now, and the handling seems to have really sharpened up. (probably because the front end has dropped a little).
Its not as good looking as it was before, but it is better for what i will be needing it for so thats fine. The RST was a 10/10 for me, no problems with it, so ill be cleaning it up and storing it away for when i need it again.
Ill clean up the whole bike tomorrow, and ill get some pictures up!0 -
