Omega Pharma - Quick-Step Cycling Team rider Tony Martin crashed during the final kilometers of Tour de France Stage 1 on Saturday. He finished the race, but after the finish he was transported to the General Hospital of Bastia, where he passed a few examinations. The CT scan excluded fractures.

However, he has a concussion and a contusion on his left lung. He also has soft tissue damages on his hip, chest, left knee and shoulder, and also on his back. Furthermore, he has a very deep wound 5cm wide on his left elbow that reaches his muscles, which causes a lot of pain and a problem moving his arm. Tony Martin will join the rest of the team tonight after today's examinations. Any decision on his participation at the second stage of the Tour de France will be taken after considering how the clinical situation evolves during the night.

OPQS would like to thank the medical service of the Tour de France, as well as the medical staff of the hospital in Bastia for their help and support.

ETA - Translation: Tony has an entire episode of Casualty across his various body parts and we look forward to seeing him on the start line tomorrow.

"Any decision on his participation at the second stage of the Tour de France will be taken after considering how the clinical situation evolves during the night".

fairly heavy fall then, very impressive if Martin starts tomorrow. it is very rare to have a contusion (bruising) to the lung without rib damage unless he has infant bendy bones...

managed to watch the first hour of the stage, then caught the end after my 7 year old lads birthday party. pure chaos in corsica, looking forward to a bit of lumpier action tomorrow...

Any idea how to watch the full ITV highlights? Can't seem to find them on the ITV Tour de France pages. Do they put the whole show up? I can watch UK stuff through a VPN.

Google "ITV player". It should give you the choice of all ITV channels.

I only get short highlights here http://www.itv.com/tourdefrance/. Is the full highlights show not available?

I'd suggest you hang on until tomorrow ATC. ITV 4's live show get's some criticism but the analysis in the highlights is usually spot on.

The ITV highlights are worth watching if only for footage of the bus actually crashing (including driver reaction).

ITV podcast is already up, if you fancy a few more interviews and a bit of a natter.
  • My 10 year old will be pleased that Thomas lives to fight another day. We bought a "Ddraig Goch" today to wave in the Pyrranees next weekend.

    Good win for Kittel really.

I'll check back tomorrow, they're probably just slow putting them up as I remember watching them last year. Could have watched them live online I just didn't realise the time.

Must be, but they hardly seem to make contact.
Radio Shack rider going off road didn't help either.
Caused the squeeze.Klodi will not be amused.
Looking on the bright side: Maybe those Treks will need a re-spray? :P

What part did race radio play in the crash?

There seemed to be a lot of mixed messages......

I like the idea of the Treks but they are so incongruous with the kit. On reflection perhaps the colour is too insipid.

Cab very philosophical in the post race interview. Great results for Van Poppel and Millar. Both ends of the peleton spectrum covered there.

Cav mentioned that they got the call of the finish at 3km with 5km to go, i.e they were at 2km to go. I suspect that this may have influenced some positioning as I don't know why Greipel would be leaning on like that if he still had 5km to race. It appears that it may have caused a premature positioning issue.

But then Kittel didn't know about the "change" until Ned told him post yellow jersey presentation, so maybe some teams told their riders and some some didn't

Greg Henderson said Lotto thought that the finish was at the 3km point.

That wouldn't surprise me at all hence no over-reaction positioning by Kittel at the point of the accident. They say ignorance is bliss and Kittel's lack of knowledge of the proposed change showed that to be the case.

I sincerely hope that Contador is ok or the GC contest might be screwed.

Amid busgate and the dancing finish line we haven't remarked on the fact that Chris Froome has changed his glasses! 8)

Maybe the new competition is to find the Oakley sponsored rider not wearing a special TdF edition of frames!

Ha ha ha yes! I was just noticing that looking through all the photos of the stage.

EDIT - Isn't Hesjedal sponsored by Oakley? He definitely was not wearing a special 100th Tour edition pair today.

Actually, think I've found one. Gilbert's don't look like a TdF special edition pair.

And what's Sagan got on his face? :?

His DS was saying on the twitter it was his Maori war paint, which is very offensive to the Maori, if Sagan has not been accepted into a tribe he shouldn't ape their culture, they don't like it, but seriously isn't it that anti-glare stuff.

I think you could be right. Maybe he was worried about the glare off Hesjedal's specs...
