Evil, evil road! I went up a few months ago. Slowed to a crawl and collapsed, didnt have the energy to even attempt to unclip Got a lot fitter (and slightly better at climbing) since then but still haven't attempted it again. I go past it every 1-2 days and always think 'nah, not today' :oops:0 -

Ive yet to find a club where I can feel relaxed in my own ability, some I have found seem to be abit 'regimented', didnt enjoy what I saw so didnt bother.msmancunia wrote:Chadderton/Middleton border. I emailed both bury cc and shepherds cc but they didn't bother replying
Been on a run with m/cr wheelers which was great but it's a 12 mile ride to meet them at the Gateway pub on Kingsway

Belmont and Rivington are great, roads are usually pretty quiet and theres a good mix of terrain. I live in Radcliffe and it seems people take huge offence if you venture more than a mm away from the kerb.. so do little cycling round here.
Lately, been going through Helmshore along Grane Road (which has good climbs) then either on the country roads through edgerton or through Darwen into Belmont. Theres also a great detour on that route going along Roman Road and Blacksnape Road, rolling terrain with good (small but steap climbs)0 -

Preston, mostly ride small loops in Lea Town, Cottam, Woodplumpton, Catforth, Inskip, Kirkham kind of area. Also do a bit around longridge/ribchester and some over in Samlesbury.
Am looking to start heading up to Lancaster and Clitheroe this year.0 -
Most of the posts so far have been practically Midlands, bordering on the south in some cases. ;-)
Like LakesLuddite, I'm based in Kendal.
For me its generally one of the south-facing valleys - Kent, Lune, Lyth or Winster, with a couple of climbs in/out of valleys. I too avoid the lakes - I'll get to Windermere then turn and head down the Lyth Valley Road rather than battle the numpties. Far too many tourists pootling around admiring the views, combined with narrow lanes, general road detritus, not to mention killer climbs.
Plenty of options - 20-odd miles relatively flat (~1000ft) out to Grange, Arnside or Carnforth, or a few nasty hills out through Underbarrow/Brigsteer or as I did last night, a loop up Shap and round through Orton and Tebay, including a stretch cycling down the central reservation of the M6 :-D . All relatively quiet roads.0 -
I'm a north-west rider, although I'm not being very good at riding longer distances at the moment. I ride around 7 miles a day on my Brompton, and then at weekends I am still under the 10 mile mark on my road bike. Rides are mostly around Wigan / Shevington area.
I suffered a stroke just under 6 months ago hence my shorter rides at the moment, but I do still want to go further but am still a bit scared of going further from home at the moment!
My son has joined Warrington Clarion, for the Saturday morning kids bikes sessions.0 -

Wouldn't worry about the shorter distances, good job getting back on the bike and having the commitment to ride after that, I know I'd be concerned about riding again if that had happened to me. A family member suffered one and their movement was always limited afterwards. Hope you eventually get the distances you want and it helps your recovery (mentally and physically).0 -
Warrington here, mainly head south of the town. Also a North Cheshire Clarion member.0

I'm from Ramsbottom and even though its been mentioned a few times in this thread if you get the chance then Rivington and Belmont is a good area, obviously plenty of hills and other cyclists! Sunday afternoons can be hectic (the decents get ruined with cars going slow due to passing on narrow lanes) , through the week is great.. And you gotta love the area around the forest of bowland, the road from Slaidburn to bentham (Cross of Greet) is usually traffic free. Done a 40 mile loop there last October and only seen 2 cars.0

Never been to Belmont and Riv on a Sunday, I usually go mid week or Saturdays. Mid week afternoon (day off work) its very quiet. Saturdays haven't been as busy as I expected, probably due to the weather. Come summer time, I expect it will be swarming of cyclists0 -
based in Preston
most rides are around the trough of bowland, jubilee tower and up around lancaster/caton/littledale. Generally rides where I (we) can end up at Scorton Barn. For more of a potter it's beacon fell, oakenclough etc0 -
Went from Chad through Bury and Ramsbotton over Old Betts and back through Littleborough and Holly Lake this morning, nice early start to the day.0

Westhoughton and a relative newbie. Have clipped Rivington, looking to head over Rivvy towards belmont in the next couple of weeks. Typically going towards Wigan and up the A49 as there are several options to cout across to the A6 to head back. Typically seeing the likes of Exton and Chorley.
After a ride out a few weeks ago where I found myself sitting outside Fredericks without money (I was close to phoning my wife - come quick - it's an emergency - bring money - Am outside Fredericks) I now seem to pass most weeks and it is a point of honour that I don't call in.

If you are going up the long drag past Horwich baths turn left on Mill Lane and follow it up to Foxholes Road it will bring you out on Georges Lane , Its a short climb I think its 11.8 %
