Was it Simon who looked as though he was sprinting with plague of Ants in his shorts? Proper 4th Cat sprinting with almost a self inflicted crash. Nice!

Not sure whether Sky need much practice in doing a bit of pulling on the front. Probably need some practice in taking some time out. :s

Don't know why he didn't just whack it up another few gears... was spinning like crazy compared to everyone else.
  • Congratulations to Dan Martin. What a brilliant win. Hopefully it will serve as a platform for even bigger things for him this year.

Thought that circuit might have given us a more exciting finish. Good win by Dan Martin though, took the lead in style then did everything right to keep the lead.

I was expecting JRod and Quintana to go ape-sH$t on that circuit...

dont know who that was, but terrible sprint. Muppet-like to be honest.

EDIT: yes it was Julien Simon. Muppet.

Great win for Dan Martin and well deserved.

Thought todays stage was a MASSIVE anti-climax though. :(

Agree, in fact after a great first few stages the last 3 were pretty woeful.

Garmin did a great tactical job, not just Martin taking bonus seconds but using another rider to sweep up some of the remaining seconds.

I second that! Have just seen the highlights on Eurosport having been out all day with no clue of the result. So pleased for Dan Martin. I can live with an anti-climactic stage!!

Wagnerian commentary across 3 simultaneous races, staged over divergent topologies with a twisted psycho-geography, impelled by a unifying theme.

Chapeau, soldier. Didn't see a crank turned, but don't feel I missed a nuance. Great to see a stage race won by someone willing to risk it all. Hope it encourages the others.

The benefit of no TT, being defensive can't win then.

Not taking anything away from him though because he obviously wasn't the only one in the break, and rode a good ride up the climb.

Yep. Should be tense GTs this year. If you can't TT like an end of level boss, you give up, or you go into the pain cavalcade with Tommy V.

might have been the last edition of this race as the local government have confirmed they will not be funding it next year

There'll be nothing left in Spain soon except possibly the Vuelta. I guess with the state of the country's economy it's not a surprise. It's a congested part of the season though so plenty of alternatives for teams.

For the ProTour teams, yes, but with what's happening thoughout some of the trad racing countries' economies the opportunities for the local (Italian, Spanish, Portuguese) conti teams in particular to race against the PT guys, get more exposure etc, are shrinking all the time....

I'm slightly surprised the WCS people haven't made a quick move for this one and the ToB. Turn them into 4 days races and hey presto, 2 markets covered off

Given that the local government doesn't want to help finance it, would WCS be interested? I've no idea about the economics of WCS but surely they would want to get as much government funding as possible (I'm guessing that newer tours like Oman, Qatar and Beijing all come with a hefty, direct or indirect, subsidy)...

I wonder if the Eurozone crisis will prove to be the real catalyst for McQaid's vision of a more globalised cycling calendar...
