Ji, the Chinese GShim rider. I for one am pleased he is in the team rather than another flatland brute.

    I'll second that, cool story

Passionate guy. I liked this quote

“Even the riders from other teams like Lotto-Belisol come up to me sometimes and ask: ‘hey Cheng, you're gonna pull?' It seems like everyone likes to follow me. I always ride at 75% of my possibilities, so on hard days, I can push more."

yeah sounds like a modest and selfless rider. I'm a bit confused by Degenkolb getting annoyed at his inclusion since the piece mention Degenkolb's Vuelta wins as a result of Cheng's work. Maybe he's forgotten.

Isn't he in at the expense of Frohlinger? Presumably they would just rather have another German on the squad.

Well considering you have your hands on the bars practically all the time I can see how it would be pretty awful to ride. Imagine having cut with stitches then pressing against it for 5 hours a day!

I was being slightly tongue in cheek hence the exclamation mark

However I'll be amazed if he doesn't start even if he does have to discount doing much on the first couple of stages. I'm sure riders have raced with far worse injuries following incidents

    Hoogerland springs to mind

Shame it now clashes badly with their bikes!

Michael Matthews has crashed and required 6 stitches in his hand. Tour start in doubt.

What a disaster. I cant believe they are making them do that. What a joke. Would be so pissed as a sponsor. It looks plain weird.

Oooo Tinkoff go all Vini Fantini (or whatever they're called now).

    Not nice.

    And ouch for Matthews.

They should have gone all white with yellow markings...that should have been passable by the stupid organisers.

To be fair the Tour is sort of associated with a yellow jumper.

It would have made more sense for Tinkoff Saxo to reverse the existing yellow and blue...

They must have heard that all cyclists in the UK should wear hi-viz clothing

Am I the only one who prefers that version of the Tinkoff kit? But then I'm a commuter so partial to hi-viz, my all time favourite pro kit probably the 1989 ADR one. It will look horrible with normal yellow bikes, will give Belkin a run for their money in the "worst kit / bike combo" stakes.

Millar on the TdF teams and leaders. I liked his description of Mollema: "Like a Tonka toy he’s tough and doesn’t break when dropped" :)

Edit: reading on, he's not pulling many punches:
One of those riders who survives the first decision on a mountain stage when the lead group still contains 30 riders, then when it gets harder 15 of them leave him behind. But I’m sure he’s a nice guy. (Taaramae)
If you’re not an established cycling watcher and have come to the sport in the past four years, you might not have heard of the Feillu brothers. Brice and Romain used to do quite well. The clue is in the tense.

Yeah I get the impression it must have been written a while ago, he's also saying Valverde's TT'ing is a weak point without any mention of him winning the Spanish TT champs very recently. No mention of Yates with OGE either.

He does say "wins or perfomrances of note"... isn't the TdS just a chipper? :P

    Team leader – Joaquim Rodríguez

The Barcelona man has started selected races with good intentions this year but he hasn’t finished many and his hopes of being World No1 for the fourth year running are looking decidedly slim. A repeat of his third place in last year’s Tour would save his skin.

-Although he has won it three times already, Gilbert was the holder in 2011 so it is not 'in a row'.

    --

Costa is 12th in the rankings. Best performance by a WC for a long time.

“I just want to make it absolutely clear I do not have a role in selection,” Froome said at the team’s hotel in Harrogate yesterday.

Froome just showing how selfless a leader he is by giving the other guys first dibs at the buffet table.

    Drooling:
TV viewers will have access to more relevant information thanks to revamped graphics in the live footage. For instance, the slope's gradient will appear during mountain stages. In other circumstances, the strength and direction of the wind will be visible on screen, as well as the instant measure of the riders' speed. Coming close to the finishing line, the remaining distance will be calculated every hundred meters and the maximum speed of the sprinters will be timed by radar. Riders' positions will also be tracked by satellite throughout the race.

Nice anti-doping kicker at the end there.
