I occasionally end up swimming in a lane next to the swimming club.

They’re far from that level but it’s still amazing to see the speed and grace of proper swimmers close up.

Re the swimming advice - back in the pool this morning.

Again, very enjoyable. I slowed down the kicking to 2 per arm pull, worked on stretching out the stroke to slow it down. That gave me more time to breathe more air out and it slowed it down enough to get more air in when I did breathe in.

Still not there yet by all means but doubled the distance before i ran out of puff so that's a good start.

Also started alternating lengths breaststroke front crawl to even it out; I always was better (relatively speaking) at that anyway.

Google Adam Ocean Walker long distance swimming. Some great advice and videos of technique.

Look at the kick (or lack of) in this: ...
Possibly a lack of turbulence and fluid resistance?
    Thinking in terms of aero.
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

Core strength keeps the body straight so the only work for the legs is to balance rotation (and a bit of propulsion). If the legs drop, that increases resistance.

Yeah, I definitely find my legs dropping and I almost use the kick to lift the legs; presumably that's my weaker core not being able to hold them up.

So when I get tired the kick gets more frequent and then it becomes a vicious circle.

Edit: Since I'm on the topic, I have looked up a few training sessions, more out of curiosity, and the warm ups they all use are currently out of my grasps! Let alone the actual sets.

I guess for the first few months it'll just be adaptation, before I worry about that.

Winding folk up on weightweenies. It never gets old. They hate being called out for the nonsense they post and 'insider info' they claim to have. It really is fantasy land. I need to get my one a day quota up. Must try harder...

this is why I say a good training aid is a float as you will see what is the most effective kicking motion

I find it really tough to combine decent kicking, with decent stroke, with breathing correctly, staying horizontal etc. Keep catching myself flapping my legs pointlessly and having to intentionally slow them down.

Also a pullbuoy, so you can do the reverse and eliminate the need to kick to maintain your leg position from your stroke, and train everything else.

Cheer up, you can always drive to another pool.

There's one in Richmond a bus ride away, and New Malden a train or bus ride away. Or Hampton outdoors a bike ride through Bushy park. Not as convenient as walking though. No need to get in the car for something like that (which is cheering).

I have a free pool near me that I can use. I went to look at it the other day to see if it inspired me to start swimming again. Sadly, it didn't.

The pool I go to is really quite well heated too so you don’t even need to adjust to the water when you get in.

    Hop in, off ya go.

The lakes I swim are f*in freezing when you first get in. Even when they are the perfect temperature for swimming.
I have no idea how people swim in water under 10c without a wetsuit and don’t end up in A&E with hypothermia.

Because I think he is beige and talentless and really don't get the hype around him. He tries too hard to be 'different' and cool. Therefore he is not. He annoys me. IMO.

I remember hearing pro swimmers count how many strokes they use to do a length, in their mind is using the water not fighting it to reduce the count (efficiency). Get that right then you can gradually speed things up.

It's interesting watching 50/100m breaststrokers lift all their arms/shoulders entirely out the water, then lunge forward, then they grab the water an pull themselves forward. The arms/shoulder didn't act as a break in the fluid motion.

I don't think any hyped artist can ever be as good as the hype. The media/ fans seem to deify certain artists.

Beyonce being an example that springs to mind.

Rather than blame the artists, I'm inclined to wonder how they got elevated to God status in the first instance.

This is a great example of how different the kick is in shorter distance freestyle to the long distance:

Hearing Shaun Keaveney back on t'radio, covering for Rob Beckett on R2. I enjoyed listening to him when he did 6Music. He has a really good, intelligent style of presenting.
