Apologies for the audio-narcissism, but I'm quite pleased with this clip of a little trumpet solo wot I did yesterday. I won't leave much behind once I'm gone, unlike architects and the like, so I'll claim the odd 50 seconds here and there of making a few people happy while I'm alive.

Sweet 😊. I appreciate the quality of the tone. I tried to teach myself an instrument during lockdown (saxophone). I can play notes but can’t honestly say I have any musicality. It takes years.

Just wondering are you related to Timmy Trumpet?

Jet washing the patio and getting the annual reminder of just how bright it really is beneath the grime of the last 12 months.

Sounds great. I had the opportunity to sing with the Welsh National Opera at the Bristol Hippodrome twice last week. Some incredible voices there plus a fantastic professional orchestra. Highlight was doing a quick rehearsal and their pianist was playing one handed whilst looking down changing his shoes!

That should go in the seemingly trivial things that annoy you thread.

I went to see a joiner/carpenter I know as I had a lump of hard wood I needed to be planed.
He was finishing off 2 sash windows he had built in wood with double glazed panels, counterweights and everything.
He stopped me for a moment when he said he had some putty near his Aga in his kitchen. He re-emerged and proceeded to put the putty around the glass, then got a Stanley blade and cut the putty perfectly in 4 seemingly effortless strokes per panel. All the while talking to me.

I just enjoy seeing other people doing something they are very good at, even more so if it is something I’ve tried and realise how hard it is in reality.

Wireless shifting on my new bike. It really is rather good.

Apologies for the Aussie style photo.

    Thanks.

And yes, even I really enjoy watching the top pros (or if I'm lucky, playing with them). The level of skill in the national groups is just awesome, and that they can do everything in spades, as if it's just routine, and make your spine tingle is jaw-dropping.

    Haha, not related.

And yes, learning an instrument takes a long time, even when one's brain and body are at the most plastic. Sax is actually one of the better ones to take up as an adult, and the trombone (rather than the trumpet) isn't a bad choice. The biggest step is to get to a level where you can join some sort of community ensemble, even at a basic level, then it's easier to get motivated, with the music that the ensemble plays.

Trombone was one of the few instruments I never got sent to play by the conductor of my brass band when I was a kid. He tried ever larger from cornet to E flat bass in the hope of finding something I could actually play but when you don’t actually practice outside of full band rehearsal it doesn’t really matter what they try you on. I’ve never understood how trombonists find the right position for the note.

Oddly the MDs of both choirs I sing with are trombonists and another was briefly MD of the small group I originally started singing with (he’s now quite successful as a composer, arranger, conductor and adjudicator on the brass band circuit).

Remembering where it was last year, and finding the same Lily of the Valley plant in Topsham just in flower to wish my French correspondents happy 1st of May.

    Learning to play the drums.
By any measure, my natural talent has yet to rear its ugly head.
However, the mere fact I am not totally incompetent and can clearly demonstrate progress is very satisfying.

Well done. I had one lesson from a friend/teacher, and though I'm good at rhythm, I found the coordination required between four limbs challenging. But I'm even worse at violin and guitar.

It's just as well I'm much better at tooting my trumpet.

Getting my fitness back and starting get regular running PBs again after 2 years where I never thought I’d see one again. I’ll never be better than a mediocre local club level runner but in the past 2 weeks I’ve managed to get a new PB at 10k then finally got a new 5k PB after more than 4 years without then went a beat it again by 34 seconds a week later.

Just did the first local league race of the season and knocked off 10.5 minutes over the same 5.2 mile course! It’s amazing what changing job and getting your life back can do.

Now I need to beat my half marathon and marathon PBs by the end of the year. Marathon has always been my Achilles heel but even with a rubbish PB I may struggle to beat it as my only one this year is Snowdonia with 2,600 feet of climbing (my PB course has 230 feet).
