Mind you, I've been know to choose an analogy on the fly, trying to explain a concept, then as I work through it with the person I'm trying to explain the concept to realise I've ended up at the wrong place (to use an analogy).0

I would have thought that finally, this government, with the highest taxation in the UK for 70 years, would disabuse you of the notion that taxes are left wing.

That is not a good place to be and needs putting right - there is only one party that actually wants to do that. To be fair to Macron, he is trying to reduce public spending - why do you think that is? (Although without much success)."I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -

I think that's a significant factor in France's bloated state spending problem and from memory is something that Macron is trying to get under control - but struggling to do because they go on strike as soon as anyone tries to change anything. Quelle surprise...rick_chasey said:

[We haven't had a Labour govt. since 1979. Blair/Brown weren't 'Labour'. You cannot blame the left].
Why do you think Macron is trying to cut public expenditure?
(Clue: could it be too high?)"I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -
Here's some commentary on France from the OECD and why it needs to change course. A key component is that they need to spend less.
https://oecd.org/economy/francecleanbreakneededtostopworseningpublicfinances.htm
We need to stop this naive assumption that more public spending is always good. There are clearly limits, as shown by France.
The other big problem noted in the report is (surprise surprise) that their tax levels are too high and not conducive to growth..."I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -
And a more recent article with a simple headline:
https://oecd-ilibrary.org/economics/public-spending-is-high_7784206f-en"I spent most of my money on birds, booze and fast cars: the rest of it I just squandered." [George Best]0 -

I don't think it would be worse under Labour other than some headline grabbing measures which would not mean much.0 -
Clearly I can't prove it as there is no alternative reality where Labour was in power over that period, but I have a hunch that the likes of you and I would be worse off in that scenario.surrey_commuter said:
