That's because it's not doping. So it's a sensible reaction. I bet they don't lose their mind if someone uses an asthma inhaler either.
Didn’t a rider’s dad get done for carrying loads of viagra for him?

Viagra would enhance sport performance if you were impaired. It is used to treat pulmonary hypertension by increasing blood flow through the lung capillaries. If you are healthy I suspect it would be detrimental because lung perfusion is very high already and blood flow is diverted elsewhere.

One of the genetic advantages in some high altitude populations (Tibetan I think, but not sure without checking) is enhanced blood flow through the lungs by a similar mechanism, but I doubt they have permeant stiffies.

So I follow the NFL, which, as we know, is a massive pharmaceutical testing league.

Anyway, a bit on one of the NFL talkshows went a bit viral after a former top player from the 00s was offering some suggestions to a current player who struggles with cold feet in cold weather due to circulation.

"just take some viagra! We all did it. Is great for the circulation"

I always get really cold feet on the bike, so this might be a good solution...

Debate going on in baseball around the possible nomination of Barry Bonds to the Hall of Fame

The 'jury' for the Hall of Fame, drawn from sportswriters etc, have a shortlist to pick from.

A player can be on the list 10 times before dropping off and becoming ineligible. Bonds is in his 10th and final season of eligibility

Now, I only started watching baseball at the tail end of last season and I don't know the full ins and outs of this, or the exact history, but there seems to be echoes of discussions we have in cycling as to the place in history of former dopers.

He is thought of as one of the greatest ever, many argue he had already a 'Hall of Fame' career before the steroid era began, and there are others in the HoF that weren't as good as him but were known to have doped.

If they exclude Pete Rose for life for gambling, they should exclude Bonds for doping

So it looks like the new Russian wonderkid figure skater has tested positive. I don't really bother with figure skating but saw a bit of her and she looked excellent.

Seemingly the Russians are saying she tested positive on Christmas day so it doesn't count.
  • Wasn't it for angina medication?

Genuine question - how is that performance enhancing?

She's 15 years old for god's sake. This should blow up enormously if there are coaches (and parents?) procuring and administering heart medication to 15 year old girls, even if they know about it. I'm sure she's not stupid, but she is incredibly vulnerable to persuasion. At the very least I'd want to see prosecutions.

As to how this drug helps?

"Controlled studies in angina patients have shown that trimetazidine increases coronary flow reserve, thereby delaying the onset of ischemia associated with exercise, limits rapid swings in blood pressure without any significant variations in heart rate, significantly decreases the frequency of angina attacks, and leads to a significant decrease in the use of nitrates."

I'm no medic, but anything that affects heart and blood pressure stability could benefit in competition.

    Contaminated Christmas pudding?? :D

Joking aside, this really is shocking. I mean someone her age, you have to assume, and hope, this was something she was pressured into doing. At that age she is very vulnerable and i imagine was desperate to be selected for the Olympics.

Very very sad really as no matter what the outcome now, her career is pretty much done - in that if she carries on competing (after any potential suspension) she will always be tainted - and it would be very difficult for someone so young to handle that.

Lot of people assuming she was pressured. That would still imply she knew. As opposed to simply taking a vitamin supplement provided by her coach.
  • It’s no surprise to me that a 15 year old Russian gets popped.
My only surprise is that they aren’t caught more often.

Remember the only doping positive at the time during the London Olympics?
Track cyclist Victoria Baranov. I know for a fact she was doping as a junior, as was pretty much the whole junior team.

Will this bring into doubt Russia being allowed to participate in future Olympics under the ROC banner? It has always been a farcical arrangement.
  • Same thing basically as Maria Sharapova was busted for, and a few other Russkies I think wasn't it? Meldonium or something?

It's also consistent with stories I've heard of teenage amateur female golfers (good but no Sorenstams) being on some testosterone. Yes, testosterone on teenage girls, for crying out loud.

They shouldn't be competing under any banner.

Russia have never shown any contrition or remorse. Their stock response is to deny everything, obstruct attempts at investigation and attack the whistle blowers.
