No rain, sunshine would be nice, and something over 10 degs and no more than a light Westerly or South Westerly breeze would be fine please :D

Just grab the link I posted earlier and stick it on your favourites list then you can keep a running check on the forecast as the date approaches.

These long range forecasts are a lot of bollox. They could not even get the weather correct 3 days before the tour of the border on sunday. no weather warnings yet we had flooding, landslides, people rescued and 2 folk carted off in an ambulance with hypothermia. The BBC stopped doing long range forecasts after their shambolic "Bar B Que' summer forecast and it rained for 60 days every day in most places in scotland. Like any event in scotland you pack 2 bags not 1. only place in the world were you can get a suntan one day and hypothermia the day after.

Finally managed my first ever 50 miler, can't say I enjoyed it one bit, painful, slow, very slow and boring beyond belief.

Oh well. At 50 miles on the day you will have approximately climbed Schiehallion and be on the descent with a right hand turn to come back into the wind for another few miles. That will stop you from getting bored.

You could try and join a club, or if a club doesn't appeal see if there is a skyride local or a meetup group close by. Cycling with a group helps alot in terms of boredom (and speed too).

Although personally i like long solo rides - pick a nice route, appreciate your surrounding, think about stuff or even just think about virtually nothing other than riding your bike and the road in front. Solo riding can have a real meditative quality.

If that doesn't work there is always strava that can liven up a ride!

I'm more concerned about finish time, as I'm hoping it's still light when and if I do.

Interesting that this year all the fingernail-biting is about the weather. Every other year it's been the hills, maybe people are finally getting the message, there only is one real hill.

Did the Tour o the Borders last week so I'm in the fortunate position of knowing I've ridden in the worst conditions I will find this year. Looking forward to the Etape immensely.
You've no won the Big Cup since 1902!

I did the etape pennines last year, when you look at the profiles of caledonia against pennines in the race info booklet, Schiehallion seems a welcome relief from the relative flatness of the route. Although the last 4 or 4 lumps towards Pitlochry are little stings in the tail. As you say only done it in decent weather, bad weather could make it a different animal.

I suppose it's all relative, I did it last year and thought it was quite hilly. I do however have a problem with hills as I'm a wee bit overweight, anyway back again this year for another go and looking forward to it.

I think the profile is a pretty good mix of flat and hills. One of highlights for me is the section after the Queens view along Loch Tummel to Loch Rannoch - its just seriously good fun bombing along there in a huge group!

I'm in wave D, fine by me - as always I'll expect to be overtaken by a lot of faster riders, but hopefully less this year than last year!

Met office forecast is staying quite consistently on the theme of high pressure, settled, easterly winds:
    Met office wrote:
UK Outlook for Friday 10 May 2013 to Friday 24 May 2013:

It should be generally settled with an easterly weather type thought most likely to prevail through the bulk of this period. Given that the North Sea is colder than normal for May, this will leave eastern coasts colder than average. Further inland, daytime temperatures will most likely be around average, and perhaps a little above in the west. Meanwhile, more settled weather also increases the chances of below average rainfall amounts, especially in western and northwestern regions, with near or above average sunshine

That could mean grey and cold, or it could be quite sunny, "eastern coasts" weather can extend half way across Scotland on some days, or half way up the beach on others.
My guess is quite pleasant, but likely frost first thing, and a light easterly wind that will pick up through the day as it warms up - not necessarily good news.
But it's still pretty variable at this stage.

OK, I have applied my literally incredible superintelligence to this and worked out that thegreatdivide is Shirley's superhero secret identity, whereas Stedman must be Crispin, unless it's actually Sharon.

As for me, my identity must remain forever secret.
